C. YOZGAT Obituary

YOZGAT, C.A.

Dr. C.A. Yozgat, a Gainesville resident since 1963, passed away at home on Monday April 4, 2011. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Edythe Ehrenberg Yozgat, and cherished daughter Suzan Yozgat. His survivors include his daughter Rizan Yozgat (and husband Gregg Armstrong); his son Kim Yozgat (and wife Marcy); his grandchildren: William Jarvis (and wife Megan), Alec Jarvis, and Matthew and Christopher Yozgat; as well as his great-grandsons Lennon and Ciaran Jarvis.

Born in Turkey in 1926, Dr. Yozgat came to the US in 1953, and practiced psychiatry in Gainesville from 1963- 1988 at UF Student Mental Health Services, then at Meridian Behavioral Health from 1989-2003. In recent years he continued to work part-time locally and in Jacksonville. Dr. Yozgat first, and foremost, loved his family; he loved to travel with his wife as they logged more than one million miles of cross-country driving. He loved daily walks through his neighborhood until his recent illness. He loved the clients he felt privileged to have worked with, remembering their stories long after he had last seen them. He deeply cared about all people: even when hospitalized earlier this year, he inquired about and was genuinely interested in the lives and families of those who were assisting him, including housekeeping, nursing and clerical staff. He truly loved and valued the gift of life.

A private service will be held on Friday, April 8, 2011. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alachua Country Crisis Center at: Friends of the Crisis Center P.O. Box 357284, Gainesville FL 32635.

Arrangements are entrusted to Forest Meadows Funeral Home, Cemeteries and Crematory. (352) 378-2528 Please sign the guestbook at www.forestmeadowsfh.com

I can't tell you why, but for some reason this lovely man's memory popped into my head this evening, 50 years after I first met him. I was a student at the University of Florida, and was not well, and had been admitted to the infirmary. My physician asked for a psychiatric consult and in walked Dr. Yozgat. He proceeded to save my life, by asking one simple question. Why don't you wait and see what your life has to offer? Here I am, 50 years later, retired after a career in not-for-profit, still married for 44 years and the grandmother of seven. I will forever be grateful to this sweet man for reminding me of the sanctity of life. Since my retirement I have written six novels that all deal with mental health issues in a fictional way, in hopes that my characters can impart some of his wisdom as well as others I've met along my journey. May God bless his family and keep him in the palm of his hand for eternity.

I had fond memories of Yozy as I called him. One day I stopped by his office and chatted with him. He was so greateful as he had nothing to do and thanked me for coming to rescue him from boredom. We started talking about Turkey and I added my time that I had spent there while in the Navy. We pulled off a piece of desk calendar and he drew a map of Turkey to aid our discussion. What a wonderful time we had that day! I will never forget that map of Turkey! I admired and loved him. I am saddened by his passing.

Dr. Yozgat was my friend for the past 14 years. He was always concerned about what was going on in my life, as well as my Mom and the double J's as he called them (my daughter & son-in-law)..... it was a privilege to share life with him. I will miss his frequent calls and our times of laughter. My sincere and heartfelt sympathy to Kim and Rizan and their families. Darla Greer
