JOHN VIDAL Obituary

VIDAL, JOHN A.

John A. "Jack" Vidal, 85, passed away July 2, 2011 at E.T. York Hospice Care Center. He crossed the river and rested in the shade. He was the 3rd son of Albert and Eva H. Vidal who predeceased him, as did his wife Elizabeth and brothers, A. Pierre Vidal and Dr. Fred L. Vidal.

Jack was a life long resident and member of one of Gainesville's early families. His grandfather, Dr. A.J. Vidal founded Vidal Drug Store in 1881.

He attended Gainesville High Grade School and P.K. Yonge School, then graduated from the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. He belonged to the Grand Guard.

He was a third generation pharmacist for forty years, first at the family City Drug Store with his dad, Albert and older brother Pierre. Later he retired from Eckerd Drugs Millhopper store. Jack was a Presbyterian and served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII. Jack was a golfer who played on the Gator golf team in the fourties. He was a member of the Lettermans F Club. While a member of the Gainesville Golf and Country Club he made a hole in one, four separate times. He enjoyed tournament golf and played in the Southern, Florida State, First Coast, and Gator Seniors.

He is survived by sons, John H. Vidal, and Jack A. Vidal, daughter-in-law, Tammy Vidal, grandsons Aaron Gamble and Anthony Sansone, and cousin J. Don Hester.

A Memorial Service will be held on July 16, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Jack and Tammy's Home on Lily Lake.

Jackie, I am thinking of you and your family as you remember your father today. Laugh and smile often when you think of your dad. Let the tears come when they will, and they will, for a while. It just means that you miss him and you loved him and that is a good thing.

I am very sorry to hear of Mr Vidal's passing. I had the pleasure to play gold with him a few times. One very special round was with his son Jackie on fathers days , on that day Jackie shot his lowest round ever a 67 giving Mr Vidal a really great fathers day present . My sympathy to all the family

My sister, Rosetta Carver, I believe was in Jack's class at PKY in the 40's. I remember the name from her memories of her school days and her friends at PKY. As a child (Rosetta was 15 yrs. older than I), I remember going to Vidal's Drugs with my dad, Dr. Wm. Carver....I never knew Jack myself unless I saw him at the store, which I probably did at various times...I left for college in '59 after graduating from PKY, where both of my sisiters, Sara and Rosetta graduated also...so many memories of our old school days---for all of you, too, I'm sure.
Blessings in your time of sorrow,
Bess Carver, PKY '59

I am so sorry to here about Jack. He was a very good golfing friend of my dad, John E. Merrill and I played a lot of golf with Jack when I was a member of the Gainesville Country Club. I had a lot of fond golf memories with Jack.
