TRAVIS, LARRY LEE, 72
High Springs, FL - Larry Lee Travis, 72, of High Springs, FL went home to be with the Lord, September 10, 2013. He was born October 31, 1940 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Ralph and Marian Howell Travis.
Larry was a University of Florida football player from 1958-1962 where he earned All-SEC honors as well as Academic All-America honors in 1962. He was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. Larry was president of the F Club in 2011 and served on the Hall of Fame committee. He was inducted into the University of Florida Hall of Fame in 2012.
Identified as one of college football's most respected assistant football coaches, Larry's career included stops at the University of Florida, University of Kansas, Ole Miss, Louisville, and Georgia Tech. After his coaching career, Larry moved into athletic ad-ministration in 1982 under legendary Georgia Tech Athletic Director Homer Rice. He then became Athletic Director at Kansas State and went onto the same position at Western Carolina including a stop at the Naval Academy as Assistant Athletic Director.
Larry was active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was a member of the High Springs Masonic Lodge #137 and served as Worshipful Master in 2006. Larry was also a Senior De Molay (over 50 years). Recently, he was on the High Springs City Commission for 6 years which included a term as Mayor.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marian Louise Howell and father, Ralph Edward Travis, Larry is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dorothea Ann Travis; brother, Steven Lynn Travis; sisters, Judith Ann Richardson, Melanie Kay Fischel and Barbara Jane Healis; sons, Michael Edwin Travis and Scott Edward Travis; daughter, Laura Lee Schwartz; and grandchildren, Ashley Suzanne Travis, Coleman Michael Travis, Travis James Schwartz and Matthew Michael Schwartz.
The celebration service will be at the University of Florida's Touchdown Terrace on Saturday, September 14th 2013 from 3pm-6pm. In lieu of flowers, please contact the Evans-Carter Funeral Home for information. (386) 454-2444
