CHRISTOPHER, 63
Gainesville - Matthew Christopher Marsh of Gainesville, FL passed away unexpectedly on May 10, 2013 at age 63. Born in Huntsville, AL on December 8, 1949, he graduated from Huntsville High School. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Louise Marsh, and his brother, Barry Marsh. He is survived by his sisters Marilyn (Jim) Lucas of Ohio, Margaret (Dick) Schock, and Julia Marsh of Huntsville and his sister-in-law Constance Marsh of Virginia. Mr. Marsh will be among those remembered as part of the 100th Butler Family Reunion in New Hope, AL this July where his wry wit and humorous storytelling will be especially missed. His family is especially grateful for his kind and supportive neighbor and friend, Barbara Loehr. Matthew Christopher graduated from the University of California, Riverside and then dedicated his career to the Social Security Administration, where, as a Claims Representative, he served and assisted the American public in filing for their benefits. Matthew advocated for his co-workers in tireless and dedicated efforts as an officer and representative of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE). He was a charter member of Local 4056 and served as the Local Executive Vice President, Local Treasurer, and eventually Florida State Council President. He served as a delegate, member and Vice President of the North Central Florida Central Labor Council. Matthew sat on the Executive Board of the Florida State AFL-CIO and was Atlanta Region chairperson of the AFGE Council 220 Legislative and Political Action Committee. In 2000 Matthew became one of the AFGE Council 220 webmasters, a website he maintained until his death. He was an extremely active member of the Democratic Party and worked on many political campaigns and committees. I remember Christopher (as he was known then) as a very dear young boy. I haven't seen him in many years but sympathize with his family, particularly his sister Margaret and her husband Dick, in this loss.

I did not have the opportunity to meet Matthew personally, we live in a constant moving society where our work and obligations take us away from our normal life and reality. I had the opportunity to see Matthew's work at AFGE and the countless times he fought for the legal rights of his co-workers and brothers. Matthew we are already missing you, but your spirit and teachings would help us to continue fighting for what we believe at AFGE. Rest in peace brother.

There are so many stories to be remembered with Matthew that time does not allow me to recount them all. He was one of the funniest, well rounded men I have met with such a quick sense of humor. We enjoyed many holidays together, college football games and libations. You will be missed my friend.
