M.C. ALEXANDER Obituary
MACGREGOR (Alex)
Age 78 years passed away peacefully on September 3rd, 2011 at 5:15 am with his family around him at E.T. York Haven Hospice.
Alex was born in Dundee, Scotland, on December 15, 1932. He was educated at his father's Academy in Perth, Scotland, where he was captain of rugby, soccer, and cricket teams. He received his Mb Chb degree from St. Andrews University, Scotland. Alex was a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and the American College of Surgeons U.S. His Master of Surgery degree was from Dundee University, Scotland. He completed his Medical Surgical Residences in Scotland. He was a Research Fellow in Liver and Kidney Transplant Surgery in Cambridge, England and London, England, also a Research Fellow in Cardiac Surgery at USC, California. Alex met and married his beloved wife and soul mate of 49 years, Christine, while working together in Scotland.
Alex immigrated to Florida in 1971 as Associate Professor of Surgery at Shands UF Medical Center. He then had a private practice in Gainesville until his retirement in 1997. Alex was a pioneer in obesity surgery in the U.S. His surgical work touched many lives. His hobbies included sailing, photography, classical music, and orchid growing. Alex was baptized into Christ in 1976 and was a member of University City Church of Christ in Gainesville, Florida.
Alex was a beloved father of Gregor, Callum, and Gylla and father-in-law to Ramelle, Laura, and Jake. He was the sweetest papa to Gylla, Mary Helen, Morgan, Angus, baby Gylla and baby Rowan. Alex was preceded in death by his parents Alexander and Margaret Macgregor and his sister Kit Harris. Alex is survived by his brother Dr. James Macgregor O.B.E. of Scotland.

A memorial service will be conducted by Rich Howell at University City Church of Christ on Sunday, September 25th at 2pm. All friends, colleagues, and patients are welcome to attend. For further information, please call the church at (352) 392-4911. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Alex's name to the UF Foundation Center for Movement Disorders and Neurorestoration Fund or the E.T. York Haven Hospice.
