OTTO von MERING Obituary

MERING, OTTO O.

Otto Oswald von Mering passed away on December 31st 2010 at E.T. York Hospice House in Gainesville, Florida. For 88 years he mastered the art of living, illuminated all that he explored, and inspired all those he had contact with. He is fondly remembered by those he knew and touched across the globe. Born in Berlin on October 21st 1922, his family, including brother Friedrich and sister Maria, emigrated from Germany to Switzerland in 1933, and subsequently to the United States in 1939. Otto graduated from Belmont Hill School in 1940, and went on to receive his BA in History from Williams College in 1944 and his PhD from Harvard University in Social Anthropology in 1956. He was naturalized as a United States Citizen 1954. Regarding education with his greatest respect, Otto actively taught and advised, formally and informally. He taught at Belmont Hill School, Boston University, and Cambridge Junior College prior to being appointed as Assistant Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh College of Medicine in 1955. He remained at the University of Pittsburgh until 1971, achieving the rank of Professor of Social Anthropology. He subsequently was appointed Professor of Anthropology at the University of Florida, in Gainesville, Florida in 1971. During his tenure at the University of Florida, his work covered many disciplines including community teen health education, medical anthropology and gerontology. He retired joint professor emeritus of Anthropology and Gerontology from the University of Florida College of Medicine and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1998. Otto remained an active teacher, writer and lecturer until his death. His greatest satisfaction came from his students and colleagues, with whom he collaborated throughout his life. His publications and professional memberships were countless, and his volunteer work tireless. Otto was a lifelong Democrat and never hesitated to champion the rights of others. He treasured classical music, tinkering, planting, writing and correspondence.

Otto was preceded in death by his beloved wife Shirley and daughter Karin. Celebrating him are his son Gregory and his wife Susan, daughter Gretchen, daughter Hilary with husband Al, daughter Celia with husband Miguel, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. His cherished dog Cole will always be at his side.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the E.T. York Hospice House, Gainesville, FL. Arrangements are under the care of Forest Meadows Funeral Home. All are welcome to sign the online guestbook at www.forestmeadowsfh.com. Otto's specific request for a small memorial service attended by family only is being observed.

I knew Otto from 1972 until his death, and I enjoyed his plain-spoken intellectual honesty and incisiveness. I'll miss his cut-through-the-nonsense commentary and his incisive wit.

I was so sorry to learn of Dr. von Mering's passing. I was one of his graduate assistants in 1992-93 and 1995-97. He was also one of my committee members for my Ph.D. He was always very kind and took a personal interest in all of his students. It was evident that he wanted us all to succeed in our chosen fields. We kept in touch over the years and I was always amazed with his ongoing commitment to living and learning. He will be missed. My sincerest sympathies to all his family.

I worked with Otto von Mering when he was the Director of The Center for Gerontological Studies and was impressed with his availability to this students, so remarkable for a prolific researcher and writer. He was one of the most intellectually stimulating colleagues, and I hope the family finds comfort knowing how through his work he has improved the lives of thousands of people.

I did not know Dr. Otto von Mering but I had the great privilege of working with his son, Greg, during my residency at UF. I have always been told that the true legacy of a great man lives on in his children and I believe Dr. von Mering has left a legacy he can be proud of.

I worked with Dr von Mering for a year in 1987. He was the sweetest boss a person could ask for. He was such a dedicated, funny, and kind man. He will always be remembered. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time. May you find comfort with the memories.
