THOMAS EMMEL Obituary

EMMEL, THOMAS
CHADBOURNE PH.D
It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Thomas C. Emmel announce his passing on Saturday, May 26, 2018, while traveling abroad in Brazil. He was 77 years old.
Tom is lovingly remembered by his brother, John Emmel (Phyllis), his nephew, Travis, and his niece, Alexis. In addition, a multitude of friends, colleagues and former students will forever honor Tom - a noted conservationist, naturalist, prolific author and visionary - for his kindness, humor, encyclopedic knowledge and wide-ranging interests. He epitomized the ideal of the professor as educator, mentor, supporter and inspiration.
Born on May 08, 1941, Tom grew up in Los Angeles, California. His parents, Edward and Ardyce Emmel, met on an outing sponsored by the Sierra Club and encouraged an interest in nature, including taking Tom and his brother on many camping trips to all the national parks in the western U.S. Around age eight, at the suggestion of his father, Tom, then younger brother John, began collecting butterflies on all their family trips. This began a lifelong passion they shared. Their mother further encouraged their interest by driving them to entomological society meetings at Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History. His parents, a den mother and scout master, respectively, were very much involved with the scouting program, and the brothers were Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Explorer Scouts, and became Eagle Scouts as well.
When Tom was a high school senior, he was one of 40 winners of the Westinghouse Science Talent Search, for which he won a trip to Washington, D.C. Upon graduating from high school, Tom went with ornithologist L. Irby Davis, for a three month trip to southern Mexico. Tom assisted Mr. Davis in recording bird songs in the early morning and evening, then collected butterflies during the mid-day. He returned to southern California with several thousand specimens - and his lifetime interest in tropical entomology was secured. As it would turn out, some of those specimens were representative of a new species - which in April 2018 was named Cyllopsis tomemmeli in his honor.
Tom earned his B.A. at Reed College in 1963. During the summer breaks from college, Tom was a nature counselor at Sanborn Western Camps for Kids, in Colorado. He earned his Ph.D. in Population Biology at Stanford University in 1967, and was a Post-doctoral Fellow in Genetics at the University of Texas from 1967-1968. His unbridled commitment to and support of the University of Florida began in 1968 when he joined its faculty as Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences & Zoology. In 1973, he became an Associate Professor of Zoology and three years later, in 1976, he became a Professor of Zoology. He served as department chairman for Zoology, directed the Department of Zoology Division of Lepidoptera Research from 1980-2003, and directed the UF Boender Endangered Species Laboratory since its inception in 1995.
In 2004, Tom was chosen to be the Founding Director of the Florida Museum's McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity at the University of Florida. The McGuire Center was Tom's vision and concept: A state-of-the-art research and teaching center that focused on Lepidoptera and the biodiversity they represent, and by extension a facility that engaged the public and created awareness of nature's beauty and relevance to our lives. The Center was brought to fruition by the generous support of Dr. and Mrs. William McGuire, lifelong friends and admirers of Tom and his efforts. Under Dr. Emmel's leadership, The McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity has become world-renowned for research on biodiversity, habitat loss, and Lepidoptera; a major publisher of related scientific studies; a force in public education about our environment and its biodiversity; and the repository for the largest collection of Lepidoptera specimens in the world
Tom authored more than 400 scientific publications, including 35 books. His many personal research interests included the endangered Schaus Swallowtail population in the Florida Keys; the effects of mosquito control pesticides on non-target wildlife and humans living in south Florida; microevolution, population biology, and ecological genetics of Cercyonis butterflies; chromosome evolution and macroevolution in the Lepidoptera; mimicry complexes in Mechanitis and Melinaea ithomiine butterflies in the Neotropics; biology, life histories, ecology, and conservation of the California butterfly fauna; fossil butterflies; and butterfly diversity in many areas of the world. He worked tirelessly to encourage efforts to promote conservation and natural habitat preservation, such as through the Miami Blue--Save Wild Florida license plate initiative and conservation biology efforts for the overwintering Monarch butterfly sites in southern Mexico. Throughout his lifetime, Tom mentored countless students - fostering and encouraging their careers in entomology, taxonomy, the study of tropical rainforests, and conservation biology.
Dr. Tom Emmel leaves behind a tremendous and unparalleled legacy. His vision, imagination, and energy in the service of conservation and Lepidoptera will continue to inspire and inform future generations of scientists, as well as the public in general. His life work contributed to making a better world, and the impact will be enduring.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Tom can be made to the Thomas C. Emmel Founding Director's Endowment, which supports collections and research at the Florida Museum's McGuire Center.
Funeral services and a celebration of life for Tom are to be announced in the near future.

Apologies for the lateness of this, but wanted to share with you that I have fond memories of my undergraduate advisor at UF. Post-scholastically also, it was a pleasure to work with him regarding Schaus' swallowtail releases in south Florida and he is still missed and the impacts he made to help nature continue to this day.
In addition.... another colleague, David Cook, also would like to share this with you: Tom was Department of Zoology chair during the first part of my tenure at UF, and one of the first grantees to the then-GFC´s nongame grants program (my first position with the agency - FWC), for both Schaus' and tree snails. I remember him calling me at home with an update on Schaus' immediately following Hurricane Andrew. He was a most remarkable and truly dedicated scientist.

Tom helped countless students through studies in higher education through offering employment, counsel, and advocacy to maximize their opportunities for the future. He could navigate the intricacies of the bureaucracy of academia for the benefit of others and the advancing of causes he believed in with admirable tenacity. We continue to be grateful for his friendship, care, advocacy, and encouragement during our association with him from 1968 and beyond. We are two among a multitude who were helped by Tom.

I am very sad to have learned of his passing. Tom was a life long friend, educator and mentor. As a young man with no transportation he loaned me his car so I could go to my high school prom. While I served in the U S Navy he was a constant pen pal. He always found time for me and helped me care about the world we live in. We collected clear wings in the Dominican republic. I know I am a better person because of him. Fly on PapilloThomicinecus

What a shock to hear of the unexpected passing of Tom. He was a giant in the world of Lepidoptera and a wonderful human being. Thanks to him, I was able to experience the beauty of tropical rain forests in a number of different places on planet Earth, starting with Ecuador in 1980. He was a prolific author, and I still enjoy many of his numerous publications. I certainly hope there are plenty of Lepidoptera in his new perpetual home. Although he accomplished so much during his too short of a life, I feel bad that he will miss the ultimate publication of his lifelong work on the Butterflies of California.

I'll miss Tom, my first instructor, along with Bryce Drummond and Charlie Covell at the Nature Place in Colorado.I was so thrilled to present "Butterflies in the Classroom at his request. Always fun and ready for adventure. Also a good sport when teased about his crackly voice on a butterfly DVD that he was a presenter. Will truly miss you, Tom. Your lepi friend, Suzette

It is difficult to put into words how important Tom was to our family. He was there to welcome each of our children into the world, mere moments after their births. He became the best friend, not only to Jim, but to our son, Aidan. He had an answer to every question our kids could ask. His smiling face repeatedly graced our table, and the warmth of his spirit made holidays all the more special. He was always able to find the joy in every situation and to see the best in every person he met. He stood beside us on our journey to help our son, Tristan, with his auto-immune disease and autism. He constantly encouraged me to never give up on getting Tristan's IgG infusions; even going to doctor appointments with us. He held our hands through some of the most difficult times of our lives; going to the ER with us when the kids were sick or injured and waiting along side us through surgeries. He put up with all the crazy antics our kids could dish out, and always watched them with a smile and a giggle. He accepted us for who we are; which is rare for a family with a special needs child. He had so much love for our family, and the void is tremendously felt. We still look for him to come walking down the path with his furry children (his dogs), feeding all the animals of the forest along the way. In the end, it's all the little things one misses the most; the laughter, the togetherness, the love. Tom was more than a friend; he was, and forever will be, our family.

Tom was a trusted friend and innovative visionary. I was thrilled to be invited to become part of the McGuire Center family, and I enjoyed collecting in tropical lands with him and our friends for over 20 years and 12 countries. I am still shocked at his passing, and cherish his memory.

We have lost a good friend in Dr. Thomas Emmel, whom we have known since 1991 and who went here by the friendly and simple name of "Tom". His death is incomprehensible to us. We had sat together the day before and talked about the good old days. We went on a day trip with him, to see the forests, protected by us. We owe a lot to Tom, because he and Dr. Turner prepared the way for us to establish the FAUTRON Foundation in Brazil Fauna e Flora Tropicais Rondônia, whose goal is to protect forests and preserve biodiversity.
Furthermore, we owe Tom for helping two members of our young team get the opportunity to study in Gainesville. We know Tom as an always friendly person who was always willing to help others and who will be deeply missed. Unfortunately, many good and important people say goodbye to this world too soon. A person that departs from this earth never truly leaves, for they are still alive in our hearts, and through our memories, In silent grief we say goodbye to Tom.

Tom is special to our family, especially to our son, Jonathan. We first met Tom at the Lepidopterists' Society Annual Meeting in 2014 at Utah. When Tom found out that it was Jonathan (10 years old at that time) who brought us to the meeting, he included our family in his group for all the field trips so that he and his students could help Jonathan to learn. Ever since then, Tom has encouraged and helped Jonathan by emailing us information, mailing books to us and providing us more learning opportunities. He has made an incredible impact in the heart of a young boy from Nebraska who was fortunate to be his long distance mentee. He will be forever remembered not only for his knowledge and expertise, but also his kindness and generosity.

My introduction to Tom occurred during the summer of 1967 in Costa Rica. Over the intervening five decades we remained the best of friends and colleagues. Never in my wildest of dreams did I expect to outlive Tom. But cruel fate intervened, and now I have to continue with a terrible void in my remaining days. My only solace is that I am convinced that Tom passed doing what he loved most. I can only hope for such a uniting blessing, one in which both our souls will fly on gossamer wings.

I feel deep sorrow for the great loss at Tom's passing but also great joy as I reflect back on interacting with him. Tom was such an inspiration! So inspiring was his enthusiasm, his great sense of humor, his love for wildlife, conservation and his fellow man, his generosity, and much more.

I cannot describe all that he did for me... but encouraging me through tough times especially in grad school, inspiring me to go to UF when I was still in high school, helping me follow my passions in biology when I was in college and not sure which path to take, always finding the best in my efforts, being such a great role model, and providing humor and laughter were just some of those great things he did for me.

You will be greatly missed dear friend and greatly remembered.

There is so much to say, yet the words are nowhere to be found. Tom was not only my academic adviser, he was my friend, my father in a foreign country, my inspiration, my advocate, my life coach when the hard decisions needed to be made, the person who saw potential in me before I even knew it myself. I so wanted to talk to him especially now on the verge of a transition in my life and my sorrow at his passing is indescribable, as I am sure the sorrow many others feel is. Tom remains special in many ways to all who knew him. He will always be my inspiration, my academic father, a friend like no other. He is deeply, deeply missed by my family.
