Bernard F. "Barney" Jaeger was a hard-working people person and devoted husband and father. Barney, 88, of Galion, Ohio, passed away surrounded by his family on Thursday, December 31, 2020 after a brief illness.
He was born December 21, 1932 in Rogers City, Michigan, and was the son of Bernard F. and Edna (Bonnard) Jaeger. Barney is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carol A. (Gowatch) Jaeger whom he married on August 13, 1955.
He graduated from the Shrine of the Little Flower High School in Royal Oak, Michigan in 1951 and proudly served his country in the United States Navy in submarine service for four years. Following his service, Barney attended the University of Detroit. He worked for Chrysler Missile in Warren, Michigan and Huntsville, Alabama. Barney worked at the ITT/North Electric and PECO II companies in Galion as a Manufacturing Manager and Director for 29½ years until his retirement.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Galion and served as an usher for many years. Barney loved physical fitness, being on the water, fishing, gardening and was an avid tailgater at Notre Dame Football games since 1978. Most of all, he was a loving husband and father. Barney was known to travel anywhere in the country to be present for a holiday, birthday or celebration with his children, grandchildren, and great grandson. His love for family was a hallmark of his daily life and felt through generations.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Christopher Jaeger of Chicago, Illinois and Michael (Terri) Jaeger of Kenner, Louisiana; daughter Faith (Thomas) Callahan of Newport, Rhode Island; four grandchildren Ian (Emily) Jaeger of New Orleans, Louisiana, Georgia Callahan of Boston, Massachusetts, Jason (Tammy) Jones, of New Caney, Texas, and Melissa Jones of Raleigh, North Carolina: great-grandchildren Clyde Maxwell Jaeger, Cohen Jones, Courtney (Kenny) Barnes and great-great grandson, Bennett Barnes, two sisters Della Marie Meisinger and Diane (Paul) Frechette and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers Kenneth and Leonard Jaeger.
A memorial mass will be private due to the pandemic.
Memorial contributions may be made to Avita Home Health and Hospice or St. Joseph Catholic Church in care of the funeral home.
