Frederick Stockton Obituary

BELCHERTOWN - Frederick D. Stockton, 95, of North Washington Street, passed away on July 30, 2015, at home, surrounded by his family.

Born April 10, 1920 in Stamford, Connecticut, son of Walter and Pearl (Brandt) Stockton, he was raised from the age of 4 by his uncle, Dr. Frederick Stockton and aunt, Manuella Stockton, in Birmingham, Alabama.

He proudly served his country during World War II in the US Army Air Corps. After receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama, Fred received his PhD in Applied Mathematics from Brown University before moving to Belchertown in 1953.

A member of the Belchertown Congregational Church, Fred was a professional singer who enjoyed classical music and opera; a particular hobby of his was the study of knot making. Fred retired after working for over 40 years at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst as an associate professor of civil engineering, having previously worked for the Monsanto Chemical Company.

He will be deeply missed by his wife of 66 years, Doris (Skillman) Stockton, and his two sons, Dr. Frederick Stockton and his wife Dr. Susan Solomon of Ottawa Hills, Ohio, and Thomas Stockton of Belchertown. He also leaves two precious grandchildren, Melissa Ann Stockton and Douglas Samuel Stockton, and a half brother, Jhea McClosky of California. Fred was preceded in death by his brothers, Walter and Hugh Stockton.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, Aug. 3rd at noon at Beers & Story Belchertown Funeral Home. Calling hours will precede the service from 10 a.m. to noon; burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 10 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Belchertown Congregational Church, the Belchertown Historical Association, or the Belchertown Community Band.

I always appreciated Fred's straight forward attitude. I almost always saw him together with Doris and they always seemed perfect for each other like peas in a pod. I can still hear him saying Now Doris, . I know he will be terribly missed by your family and all of us whose lives he has touched. Thank you, Lord, for the time we were able to have him. God's blessings and strength upon Doris, Tom, family, and close friends throughout.
With all our love, David Kendall, Georgina and Aeowyn
