Alice Ann Anglin McDonald, 89, of Danville, Va. died on Friday September 15, 2017, at Stratford Health and Rehabilitation after being in declining health for several months. Mrs. McDonald was born in Franklin County, Va. on July 7, 1928, daughter of the late Willie Jackson Anglin and the late Nannie Varner Anglin. The family later moved to the Penn's Store community in Patrick County, where she lived through the Depression and World War II era. She held many cherished memories of her childhood and adolescent years in "the country". After graduating from Spencer-Penn High School in 1946, she worked for 12 years as a telephone operator and shift supervisor for Lee Telephone Company in Martinsville, Va. During this time, she was a member of Broad Street Christian Church, where she was married to the late Edwin Hunter McDonald on July 26, 1958. The McDonald family lived in Reidsville, N.C. and Raleigh, N.C. before moving to Danville in 1969. Aside from a brief move to Beulaville, N.C. in 1978-1979, Alice lived the remainder of her life in Danville, first as a homemaker, and later as an employee of the Danville Memorial Hospital gift shop. After her retirement, she was a volunteer at the hospital for many years. She was also an active member of West End Christian Church. Mrs. McDonald enjoyed sewing, reading, and various arts and crafts projects, especially when they involved her granddaughters. She liked to travel and took many extended road trips with her husband, sons, and sisters to places that were both fun and educational. Alice loved birds, butterflies and angels. She also had an interest in history, current events and many sports. Alice was a devoted and beloved daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Lewis Daniel "Johnny" Anglin of Georgia. Survivors include sons, Mark McDonald and wife, Patricia of High Point, N.C. and Ross McDonald of Danville, Va.; grandchildren, Erica Dougherty and husband, Adam of Seattle, Wash. and Margaret McDonald of Atlanta, Ga.; sisters, Sadie Shaffer of Bluefield, W.Va. and Frances Bazemore of Raleigh, N.C.; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. A memorial visitation will be held on Monday, September 25, 2017, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. A private family remembrance will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to charities or organizations of choice in Alice's memory. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main is respectfully serving the McDonald family.
