Martha Isabelle Burns, age 93, of Grand Haven, passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at home.
She was born on March 18, 1931, in New Madison, Ohio, to the late Orville and Vera (Eyer) Hoff. Martha graduated from New Madison High School. She then married Dewane Gerald Burns on October 15, 1955, in Ohio. They enjoyed 67 years of marriage until his passing on February 18, 2023.
Martha held various positions throughout her life. She worked at school cafeterias, preparing and serving hot lunches, and she also provided daycare for some time. She worked for Hills Roses Wholesale Flowers for a time. She enjoyed working at public auctions in Ohio, and Dewane and Martha both worked as Custodians for Farmers State Bank and the Fort Black Café in Ohio.
Music was of great comfort to Martha, and she enjoyed playing the organ at United Methodist Church in Ohio where she was also a soloist in the choir. She loved singing with her four sisters and traveling to visit family. She also enjoyed cooking, sewing, having Friday night pizza parties with her family, going to garage sales, canning homegrown vegetables, and working on word searches.
She was a member of Hope Church, where she was a part of the "Chicks and Sticks" knitting group, and she attended the Women's DeColores weekend #75 when she was 80 years old. Martha will be remembered most for her giving heart and always being someone who would help those in need.
Martha is lovingly remembered and missed by her daughter, JoVanna (Adam) McConnell of Grand Haven; sons, Mike (Susan) Burns of Minster, Ohio, and Brad (Jackie) Burns of Bonifay, Florida; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her grandson, Beau McConnell; sisters: Barbara, Marilyn, Mary, and Joyce; sister-in-law, Treva; and brothers-in-law, Keith and Bud Burns.
The Memorial Service for Martha will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2025, at Hope Church, with Pastor Tim Taylor officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to and after the service at the church. Interment will be at Greenmound Cemetery in Ohio.
