Peyton Averitt Obituary

Averitt, Peyton Lee

February 13, 1998 - April 19, 2024

Peyton Lee Averitt, beloved son of Lydian Bernhardt and Phil Averitt, beloved brother of Caroline Averitt, died Friday, April 19, at home. He was 26.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at First Moravian Church, 304 S. Elam Ave., at 11 a.m. Sat., May 4, 2024 with reception to follow. All are invited to bring fondest memories of Peyton to share with family and friends.

Peyton loved blueberries, cats, strategy games, fireworks, thick hoodies, warm weather and spending time with his friends. He also loved his family and his girlfriend, Jordan Lacy Wren, and had a wonderful time with her on campus at UNCG. A student at Guilford Technical Community College, he looked forward to finishing his degree, starting a career and beginning the next phase of life.

He was an honors graduate of Grimsley High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society, earned the N.C. Service Learning Diploma, and held the rank of Battalion Commander in Grimsley's JROTC program his senior year. He was a member of Tri M, the music honors society, and played guitar and trumpet – but preferred guitar.

He played chess and won by instinct, recalled intricate patterns easily and built his own computer for fun. He also played baseball and basketball, but never found a sport he couldn't play at a pretty high level.

Peyton was an Eagle Scout and a member of Boy Scout Troop 107. For his Eagle project, he led the group in building an outdoor classroom at Jefferson Elementary, his former elementary school. He was a natural leader and a good judge of character. It was easy to follow Peyton.

Peyton is survived by his parents, Phillip and Lydian Averitt, of Greensboro; his sister, Caroline Averitt and her fiancé Brandon Suther, of Cary; his girlfriend, Jordan Lacy Wren of Roanoke, Va.; his grandmothers, Helen Averitt and Judy Hayes Bernhardt; and a large, loving group of aunts, uncles and cousins.

We'll always love his calm determination, big smile, deep, boomy voice, fierce loyalty and quiet belief that better days were coming.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Fellowship Hall or SPCA of the Triad, in Peyton's name.

We feel a such a deep sadness. We have not seen Peyton for many years, but he and our daughter went to preschool together: of all the children she knew there-Peyton was her best friend. Our hearts and prayers are with you.

I am so sorry to learn of Peyton's passing. I thoroughly enjoyed helping him during his time away from Grimsley as a homebound student. He was one of the students a teacher remembers-positive, hardworking, and ambitious. My love and prayers are with his family.
