Hazel Hall Obituary

Hazel Pittman Hall, wife of J.F. (Bill) Hall, and a longtime, highly respected educator in Greenville County, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2007, at home.

During her 54 years in education, she served as Principal of Travelers Rest Elementary Schools, after which she was a teacher of English and senior counselor at Parker High School. During those years, she taught part-time for the Veterans Affairs programs in the Greenville County Schools, at Furman University and at Greenville Technical College. In 1966, she formulated the Adult Education Program at Greenville Technical College, a pilot program sponsored by the governor of the state. After she became Dean of that division, the program earned the Certificate of Merit awarded by the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare for the Outstanding Program Deserving Special Recognition in the field of Adult, Vocational and Technical Education. In addition, she served as an educational consultant in the Southeast Region of the United States.

After several years, she was named the Vice President for Student Affairs at Greenville Technical College, with the responsibility for all student activities, which included recruiting, admissions, student records, guidance, job placement, veteran's affairs, financial aid and health activities. She held that position until her retirement in 1986.

During her career, Mrs. Hall received countless awards for her achievements, among them, Who's Who in the South and Southeast, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who of International Intellectuals, National Register of Prominent Americans. She also received the distinguished alumnus award from Wingate College as a "Career Woman who Delicately Balances her Professional Role with those of Civic and Church Leader. She reflects the ideals for which Wingate College stands." In September of 2003, Mrs. Hall received the highest civilian award in South Carolina, the prestigious Order of the Palmetto, from Governor Mark Sanford.

Mrs. Hall's education included attendance at Wingate Junior College (now university) and Furman University, where she earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees.

She was an active member of Locust Hill Baptist Church, where she taught several Sunday School classes, was a member of the Loyalty Sunday School class and the Marion Moorehead Missionary group. While Director of Training Union for 10 years, she was also Director of the North Greenville Associational Training Union (now Discipleship Training).

A life long resident of Travelers Rest, Mrs. Hall was the daughter of the late William L. and Bertha Flemming Pittman. In addition to her husband, survivors include two nieces, Dr. Ruth Bullard of Columbia and Mrs. Charlotte McCormick of Clemson; four great-nieces, Robin Rawl and Kim Mills of Columbia, Jackie McCormick McCall of Atlanta, Ga. and Sharla McCormick Canfield of Tampa, Fla.; two great-nephews, Michael Rawl of Lugoff and John McCormick of Tampa, Fla.; great-great-nieces, Taylor and Erica Rawl and great-great-nephews, Brent and John Mills and Connor Canfield.

She was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Pittman Kearns.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at Locust Hill Baptist Church with Dr. Niki Ballew and Thomas E. Barton, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens, Travelers Rest.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at The Howze Mortuary.

The family will be at the home, 3421 Tigerville Road, Travelers Rest.
