Mrs. Patsy L. Atchley, 80, of Greenville, SC, died Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at The Palmettos Assisted Living-Greenville, SC. Mrs. Atchley was born on June 27, 1934, in Bloomfield, MO. She was the daughter of the late Ruthford and Maggie Cook Limbaugh, and the widow of Dr. Bill L. Atchley, former president of Clemson University.

Pat attended Miss Hicky's secretarial school in St Louis, MO. Upon graduation she worked for the FBI in St Louis. Pat and Bill married in 1954 and moved to Rolla, MO where Bill taught at the University of Missouri at Rolla. Mrs. Atchley spent much of her adult life as the first lady of the following institutions of higher learning: Clemson University (1979-1985); the University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA (1987-1998); and South East Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau, MO (1998-1999).

Mrs. Atchley volunteered on the advisory board for the Hollings Cancer Center, she also volunteered for the Cerebral Palsy Center in Rolla, MO. Pat was an active participant with the local hospice of Murrells Inlet, SC. She was known to her many friends and family as a woman of strong character with a big personality.

Surviving are her daughters, Julie Smith (Robert) of Florissant, MO, and Pamela Still of Shelby, NC; son, David Atchley of Greenville, SC; daughter-in-law, Toni Atchley of Greenville, SC; five grandchildren, Steven and Gregory Smith, Kristen Still, and Alex and William Atchley; one great-grandchild, Melanie Smith; and sister, Phyllis Jones of Austin, TX.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date in Clemson, SC and a memorial service in Cape Girardeau, MO.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Palmettos Assisted Living and the caregivers from Caris Hospice and Synergy for their compassionate care of Pat in the last chapter of her life.
