Dr. Paul Franklin Holcomb, 89, of 491 Connecticut Ave., died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Born on Aug. 22, 1915, in Habersham County, Ga., he was the son of the late Walter Franklin and Mary Lucinda Burk Holcomb. A graduate of Emory University, he received his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Holcomb completed his internship in Greenville, and then practiced in Habersham County, Ga., before entering the Air Force during World War II. He served as Chief of Obstetrics in the Medical Corps at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss.; and after the war, he completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology in Augusta and Macon, Ga. He and his family moved to Spartanburg in 1952, where he continued to practice medicine until his retirement in December 1989, at the age of 74, from the office of Drs. Holcomb, Kiesau, and Barrow. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg, was Assistant Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Spartanburg) and a former Board Member of the Medical University of South Carolina, and was a member of the International College of Surgeons.
Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years, Addie Louise Fulbright Holcomb; two sisters, Lillie Gladys Holcomb and Mary Willene Holcomb, both of Clarkesville, Ga.; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul Franklin Jr. and Jean Holcomb, of Columbia; three daughters and sons-in-law, Katherine Holcomb and Johnny Workman, of Philadelphia, Pa., Anne Holcomb and the Rev. Richard Belser, of Charleston, and Louise Holcomb and David Evans, of Clarkesville, Ga.; grandchildren, Angie and Steve Patnode, Addie Holcomb, Mary Holcomb, Katie and Alex Leopold, Ginny Barr, Josh and Leslie Workman, Joe Workman, Liza and Alex Johnson, Dawson Jones, Alston Jones, Caroline and Michael Foster, Bess and Jonathan Stober, Mary Heyward Belser, Katie Belser, Eugenie and Michael Parker, Yonge Jones, Baliol Jones and Lillie Grace Evans; and several great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Lorene and David English; and a grandson, Jesse Workman.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 23, 2004, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Richard Belser and the Rev. Larry Bates. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at Clarkesville Memorial Cemetery in Clarkesville, Ga.
