Sam Griggs was born November 17, 1934 in Carthage, NC to Harry Allan Griggs, Sr. and Virginia Kivett Griggs. In his early years, he became an avid tuba player in the town of Salisbury, NC. Following high school, he entered the US Army and served his country proudly. He was Honorably discharged in 1962. Sam later attended the University of Tennessee and studied Chemistry. He married Anita Elaine White Griggs in 1959. Following graduation, he worked for the US Government then moved to Greenville, SC to work for JP Stevens where he eventually retired as Director of Environmental Affairs. Sam also eventually rejoined the military as a member of 246th National Guard Army Band and was Honorably Discharged in 1990 . In Sam's career and retirement, he maintained active in the community by playing in the Greenville Civic Band, Foothills Oompah Band, and served as a volunteer at John Knox Presbyterian Church, United Ministries and Meals on Wheels. Sam passed away the Age of 82 on April 6, 2017.

Sam is survived by his lovely wife, Anita White Griggs of Greenville, SC; sons David Howell Griggs of Charleston, SC; Joel Newton Griggs and his wife Brenda Kay Johnson Griggs and Grandson William Howell Griggs all of Lexington, SC. Sam has a predeceased Son, Michael Steven Griggs.

Sam is also survived by a brother Harry Allan Griggs, Jr. of Mobile, AL; Sisters Betty Griggs Whitaker of Salisbury, NC and Susan Griggs Griffin of Merritt Island, FL.

The family will accept visitors at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 9, 2017 in the Kirk Room at John Knox Presbyterian Church in Greenville, SC followed by a service at 3:00pm in the Sanctuary. Sam's remains will be placed in the Columbarium also at John Knox Church.
