Moon did a wonderful job of bringing the "REAL MEANING of COUNTRY MUSIC" to the Miami Valley during his days at WPFB and later developing the network from Xenia. Joe and family, I know you will do your father's memory well by keeping up this tradition.

Moon was as real as real could get. I was very blessed to get to "shake and howdy" with him one afternoon in Xenia at WBZI. Just like a friend I'd known all my life. He liked to say, "Thanks for letting me run though your transistors" I told him he still runs though vaccum tubes in some people's old radios. Sometime after that he talked about the battery Philco radio he listened to as a "young-un" in Menifee Co KY and later having an AC radio that "Wasn't worth a snap". He went from a conversation with a visitor in the studio over to an announncement over the radio effortlessly. Man, could he predict weather! No matter what kind of day I had, 10 minutes of Moon perked it right up. One of the best, one of the true legends, what else is there to say?

In My Pocket
I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.
My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.
They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.
Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.
But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

I remember driving to work from Miamisburg, Ohio to Middletown, Ohio listening to Moon Mullins at 6:00 AM on WPFB-AM.
The call letters WPFB were the initials of the current station owner Paul F. Braden. But Moon always said WPFB meant "We Play For Briars". "Briars" or "Braiarhoppers" is a nick name for "Kentuckians" for those of you of the younger generation.
Moon was fun to listen too. His self made off the cuff commericals for his sponsors were just as much if not more entertaining than the great Bluegrass and Traditional Country Music he played on his radio show.
His telling the time and outside temperature had a personal touch. He'd say, "It's 6:30 gurdy and it's colder than an Alaskan well diggers boots out there."
My favorite Moon Mullinism was, "Now That's Higher Than A Poor Man's Grocery Bill".
Hillbilly Heaven just got another member inducted. He'll be missed.

I am so sorry to hear about Moon, He will be greatly missed. He was one of the great ones when he was with Ralph Stanley and many others.
I can remember when he was a D.J.

I was never a big BlueGrass Fan, in the late 60's, early 70's I was into Rock, but I would walk into my home in Miamisburg, to find my Mom with Moon on the radio.. .. She would be fixing dinner and have WPFB on. We use to ask her to please tun that stuff off, but she would say NO That's Moon and my music. So we put up with it. Later in life,I would find Moon at places doing live shows and had the chance to say Hello to him, doubt he ever knew who I was.. Sad to see many of the DJ's I grew up with or radio people are passing.. Moon and Omar and the ones around back when I was a kid. My thoughts are with his family at this time..

When I was growing up I didn't know there was any other radio station other that Moon's. I always thought that the singers were in the radio station. (that is how young I was) All I knew was Moon just kept cranking them out. And if he really liked a song, he didn't care he would keep playing what he liked. A part of my child hood will go with him. I sure did love your station, and you.

The Death of "Moon" brought back a lot of memories of my Dad listening to Moon back in the "PFB" days long before Dad's passing in 1993. He was one of those Kentucky farm boys who came to Norwood to work and loved the feeling of home that Moon was able to put out through the radio. Of course I listened to Moon as well and have always had a love for the music that Moon played. That could be, after my retirement, I decided to try my hand at doing a radio show. Even though I never met him he was in a way a mentor for me. May Moon Mullins rest in peace as he plays Bluegrass in Heaven with my Dad on the front row urging him on.

It was a great privelege and honor to work with Moon at WPFB as I was beginning my broadcast run. He was such a very talented, funny and good man. He was generous with his compliments and on-target with his suggestions for this then-young kid. I filled in for him when he took ill one time and had an absolute blast playing the bluegrass music he had taught me to understand and appreciate. My personal pile of bluegrass CDs is a tribute to Moon and he comes to mind whenever I listen. He was a gift to our community, a tremendous and generous talent and an exceptional man. We are all lucky to have known him, and will never forget the great Moon as we keep it wrapped up good and warm and good 'n dry because... it never got no better nohow.

I was very saddened to hear of the death of "Moon" Mullins. I listened to him on WPFB for years.
Being from Kentucky myself, it sounded like I was listening to a long time friend, although we never really met.

I am saddened to lose such a knowledgeable Appalachian, Moon has left us with many true traditional stories of Kentucky life; I enjoyed working with Moon at WBZI, He was always someone that brought me much happiness, just to hear him talk. I never will forget the time his car broke down on the way to Fairborn, I picked him up and brought him back to the radio station, on the way back, immediately it wasn’t long until we were in conversation about Kentucky, may God bless the entire family and Classic Country Radio.

I remember Moon Mullins as a kid in Franklin Ohio. My mom and dad would go to a VFW and listen to him play. He was awesome. My parents loved him and I listened too. I feel bad because at that time in my life, I didn't like the music too much, but as I have gotten older, I find myself looking on the internet for Carter Family songs, Kitty Wells also, mom loved to listen to them. May GOD bless and comfort the family and friends of Paul. He has gone on to Heaven to be with the LORD. I pray he is at peace and happy. Another angel to watch over us. Bless your family at this time. Sincerely, Lisa Hatfield Lexington OH

I remember as I grew up that Moon gave my Mom & Dad a smile or good laugh to start their day. they never missed his radio program. Later in the 80's I worked @ WPFB as traffic controller & was glad to find that Moon was as friendly as he sounded on the radio. He always sounded like he just came in from the barn to have breakfast & sit & talk for a spell. It did surprise me that he was always impeccably dressed & could easily be mistaken for a banker or owner of the station. In a way he did own the station because he WAS WPFB. Prudence, I am so sorry for your loss & my condolences to your family.

I, too, grew up listening to Moon Mullins. It wasn't by choice, at first. You see, Mom & Dad listened to him daily. Being from the hills of West Virginia, he made them feel at home. Me? I was a rocker! As I grew older, however, I began to enjoy listneing to Moon & took a liking to bluegrass music. Later on, I began MC-ing many Bluegrass Festivals in the Miami Valley.
Now, all of those memories are cherished ones. Thanks Moon! You will be truly missed. It has already been said, but can't be said enough, "The angels in heaven are singing & sounding better than ever!"

Prude, Kristy, and Joe,
When Dad called to tell me of Paul's passing, it made me think of how quickly time has passed. I was immediately taken back to all of the bluegrass festivals and remotes we were drug to.
I think back to all of the hours we spent at each others houses and all of the trouble we managed to find.
I will never forget listening to Paul pick up any instrument that was near him and play it so effortlessly. He would even be gracious enough to let my Dad sit in every now and then.
I will never forget the way Paul would talk to me as if I were the only person in the room, and the way he had a genuine interest in whatever it was we would talk about. He always had a funny story or a clever one-liner.
I will always remember him being a true friend to my Dad and someone my Dad always repected and admired.
My thoughts are with you all.

We were saddened to hear of the death of Paul "Moon" Mullins. We listened to Moon many years on WPFB and WBZI, always enjoyed his downhome humor and stories of ole Kentucky. His contribution to Bluegrass music is legendary, at one time WPFB was about the only station in this area you could hear pure Bluegrass. We were glad to see him receive some recognition last year for efforts over the years.
We miss hearing "Ole Joe Clark"
We send our condolences to his wife and family members.

I began listening to Moon in '64. I got to "shake & howdy" with him and dropped him a note from time to time. Moon was a true original and true to himself. He had a real ability to draw the listener into his narrative, whether it was a country reminiscence or a sales pitch. I've never seen anyone put the fire into a fiddle like Moon did. He did everything with gen-yuh-ine enthusiasm.

I worked with "Moon" as an engineer at WPFB during the late 70's early 80's. He was the star at WPFB. His listeners were very loyal and so were his advertisers.
I always thought his sayings were so clever. Like "It ain't gonna get no better no how" when the weather was bad. Also, "No matter where you go there you are." How true it is.
I enjoyed my days at WPFB and even started enjoying some of his bluegrass music. Moon, may God be with you and your family.

I worked with Paul at WPFB in the mid-'70s; I did the evening newscast, and would come into the studio just as he finished his afternoon bluegrass show. I didn't know him well, but he was always a nice guy...very down-to-earth; and even with the local celebrity status he enjoyed, he'd always take a minute to talk. He was genuine and sincere.

Thank God for a man who never severed his roots. In Whitesburg, Kentucky, bluegrass music is what we grew up on and remains the common genre of music down there to this day. When we came up here, we were thrilled to find a man and station who proudly brought the best bluegrass music on this side of the Ohio river. We always woke up at 4 a.m. to Moon Mullins before getting out to get the work done on our farm. I will never forget the day that my Mother was overwhelmed to meet and hear Moon play some solid bluegrass music. Without Moon Mullins, I don't think bluegrass would have ever made it this far north. Thanks Moon! You will be missed.

I was an engineer at WPFB in the mid 70's, and Moon had an exceptional ear for detecting a worn needle on the turntables. When he called for a new one, you didn't argue, question or reason him out of it, you just changed the needle. I did several "remotes" with him, and he was no different on stage or when he was off stage. Likeable, knowledgeable of his music, and humble, when the occasional tour bus stopped in the parking lot, and suddenly, studio "B" would be full of pickers. Mandolin, dobro, 6 & 12 string guitars, banjo and doghouse bass, we'd handle it as good as the two mikes could pick it up. One of the funniest things I'd heard him say, was, "It's so hot and dry outside, the trees are chasing the dogs!" I miss those days, and will think of Paul everytime I hear "The Seldome Scene" playing "Rider" or "Mean Woman Blues.' Moon was an origional, and I'm proud to have had the chance to work with him.

I was born and raised in Eastern Kentucky I lived in Dayton Ohio for several years and I really enjoyed listening to Paul "MOON" Mullins. Joe and family,
Our prayers are with you all during this difficult time. I suppose Bill has Moon lined up to MC his first festival up there already. I became familar with Moon during his days on WPFB and with the Boys from Indiana and Traditional Grass years ago. Joe, I remember going to a show in Franklin many many years ago and you were still in school and playing guitar with your dad. I said then, and it's proved to be true that Moon brought you up to be as genuine as he was. He will be missed though we know you are continuing his interest in promoting bluegrass music in the greater Dayton area. I hope the Holts can put pen to paper with an appropriate remembrance. Katie Daily must have a new ring now to it as he draws the bow. We'll miss you, Moon....

I started listening to WPFB 910AM when I was in High School some 45 years ago, and I have done so ever since it moved to WBZI 1500AM; I loved the Hymns from the Hills, as did my Mother.
