Robert Etheridge Obituary

News Death Notice

ETHERIDGE, Dr. Robert F. of Oxford, Ohio passed away June 9, 2010 after a lengthy illness. A Memorial Service will be held on July 17, 2010 at the Oxford United Methodist Church at 3 PM followed by a Celebration of Life reception hosted by the family at the Heritage Room in Shriver Center. As a citizen of this community for over 50 years and as a Miami University administrator for 30 years, Bob Etheridge served in many roles to enhance the lives he touched. He retired in 1989 as Vice President for Student Affairs, and also served as Dean of Students, Dean of Men and Professor of Education. He was active in civic endeavors and enjoyed being a part of the universitys outreach for national and international development programs. He embraced local activities including the Oxford United Methodist Church, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, Oxford Community Improvement Corporation, Oxford Country Club, Kiwanis, and various committees such as the one that brought the Knolls of Oxford to this community. For these and other contributions Dr. Etheridge was awarded and recognized as Oxfords Man of the Years in 2005. Before coming to Oxford and Miami University in 1959 from Michigan State University, Bob held positions in Student Affairs Divisions there and at Southern Illinois University. His concern for people, and students in particular, was at the center of his professional life. He entered the United States Navy immediately following his high school graduation. He received his Wings of Gold after 2 1/2 years training during WWII. This led to his dedication and commitment to the NROTC program for many years. Robert F. Etheridge was born May 13, 1925 in Wayne County Illinois to parents William H. and Nellie J. Etheridge. A brother, William H. Jr. preceded him in death. Bob leaves his devoted wife of 62 years Veda Hallam; two sons, Robert H. (Bobby) and Michael S. (Donna); and four grandchildren, Ryan, Brandon, Melissa and Bradley. Bob leaves many friends, colleagues, and former students who have contributed to his wonderful life of 85 years. All who knew him will miss him and those who loved him will never forget him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Etheridge Center for Reflective Leadership, Miami University Foundation, 725 East Chestnut Street, Oxford, Ohio 45056; or the McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital Trust, 21 Lynn Avenue, Suite 107, Oxford, Ohio 45056; or the Oxford United Methodist Church, 14 North Poplar Street, Oxford, Ohio 45056. The Smith & Ogle Funeral Home is serving the family.

I knew Bob from shortly before I came to Miami University. He did a great deal for the University. The thing that stands out for me is his work to establish relationships with the Miami Nation, that have been so fruitful for the University. Well done, good and faithful servant.
