Benjamin Staba Obituary

Benjamin C. Staba, 97, of Hebron, CT, passed away peacefully at his winter home in Tavares, FL, February 26, 2017. He was born to John and Agnes Staba, in Hebron, CT, on Dec. 13, 1919, in the same home that lived in his entire life. Ben attended a one room school, taught by his sister Henrietta. He graduated in 1936 from Bacon Academy, in Colchester, CT, and joined the Navy in May of 1942, in Boston, MA. He was an Aviation Metalsmith First Class and stationed on the Princeton, then the USS Wasp CV-18. After being honorably discharged in 1945, he attended the University of Connecticut under the GI Bill. Ben then worked for United Aircraft for 33 years as a Chemical Metallurgist. Ben loved his job. In his younger days, Ben enjoyed the outdoors along with a large garden, which he shared with family and friends. He also enjoyed bee keeping, which he did for over 70 years. He enjoyed riding his Harley and spending time with his family, especially with his grandson, Bruce. He also enjoyed working part time at Hilltop Marine along side his son-in-law, John and daughter, Barbara. Ben volunteered at the Hebron Harvest Fair for many years. He was a founding member of the Hebron Historical Society (HHS). Ben, with his wife, Barbara, and sister, Henrietta, helped restore the Hebron Old Town Hall and Borrows Hill School. Ben leaves behind a daughter, Barbara (John); son, Andrew; grandson, Bruce (Meg); and great-grandson, Joseph. He is predeceased in death by his wife of 67 years, Barbara; his siblings, Julia, Jennie, Henrietta, Joseph, and Edward. A memorial service will be held in spring, in Connecticut. Memorial contributions can be made to: Hebron Historical Society, Hebron, CT or Cornerstone Hospice, Tavares, FL. Services entrusted to Baldwin Brothers Cremation Society, Tavares, FL.

The Hebron Harvest Fair just won't be the same without you, Ben, though I know you, Barbara and my parents will all be watching over us as we try to fill their shoes at the Antique Farm Display. I'm so glad I have the DVD of his tour of the building so I can bone up on things before the fair.

To Ben's family
I was so saddened to hear about Ben's passing. He truly was one of my favorite people and I feel so blessed that I had the pleasure to get to know him. Every year coming to sit with me at the fair as Barbara and John set up their "crafts" I always looked forward to Tuesday and Wednesday of the fair for that reason. It won't be the same with out him there.
My deepest sympathies to all of you.

To Barbara and John,
I am sorry to hear of Ben's passing. When I came to work at Hilltop Marine, Ben was a kind and gentle mentor. I will always remember his smiling face and warm friendly guidance as I learned to be a mechanic. He was truly a great guy and he will be missed by many who had the great fortune to know him. Both of you and Ben will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Morgan

To Mr. Staba's family. I will remember him with fondness for our conversations over the years. I last saw him at a dinner held at the Russell Mercer Senior Center fairly recently. As always, he was spirited and engaging. I still remember when I was the Treasurer of the Hebron Republican Town Committee in the '80s, and a donation check came in from Ben. When people go to the polls, they expect to have a choice put up by the political parties, but so few actually send a check of support. That made his donation special, and the only one received during that particular political season. His heart was in the right place. Hebron has lost one of its pillars.
