Bernard Blum Obituary

BLUM, Bernard Bernard Blum, of Bloomfield, formerly of West Hartford, died Wednesday, (October 8, 2008) at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. Many people felt like they lost a father when they learned that Bernie Blum passed away. He was a rock to his family and friends, to his clients and colleagues, to his profession and his faith. You could not go out with him in public—even in airports or restaurants around the country—without bumping into someone who would greet him warmly, "Bernie!" When people looked for help, he was there without asking. When people looked for leadership, they looked naturally to him. Born in Hartford, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Yetta (Chorches) Blum. He graduated New York University in 1943 (B.S.) His CPA practice, which began in 1946 and became Blum Kaplan & Company ten years later, is today Blum Shapiro & Company, PC, Connecticut's largest regional accounting, tax and business consulting firm. Bernie amazed everyone with his ability to perform complex calculations in his head, faster than any technology. He served his profession, on the Board of Governors of the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants; on the Executive Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants; as a member of the Advisory Panel to the State Tax Commissioner; and as President of the Estate and Business Planning Council of Hartford, where he was the recipient of its first Service Award. He chaired both the CPA Society's Federal and State Taxation Committees. In 1984 Bernie's peers recognized him with the CSCPA Annual Service Award and in 1986 the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants honored him with its Meritorious Service Award. He received the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) Distinguished Service Award in 2001. He was president of the Greater Hartford Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), as well as an IMA national board member. Bernie served his community as both the Executive Committee of the Greater Hartford Chapter of the American Red Cross, and on the Boards of Directors of several charitable institutions. He served his faith as a past president of Beth El Temple (1972-73) of West Hartford. He was a Director and former treasurer of the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford and vice-chairman of its finance committee, a member of Level Sequin Lodge No. 140 A.F. & A.M., the Jonathan Lodge I.O.O.F., and Ararat Lodge No. 13 B'nai Brith. Bernie was Chairman of the Hebrew Home & Hospital Trust Fund, and he served on the Board of Directors of the Greater Hartford Jewish Community Center in West Hartford. He was a former president of the Double "8" Club. At an age when many think of retirement, Bernie began the arduous course of study to become a Certified Financial Planner, one of the first in Connecticut to earn the designation. He also held the designations of Accredited Estate Planner, Personal Financial Specialist and Registered Investment Advisor. Bernie was mentor to many young accountants, and advisor to leaders in both parties, appointed by Governor Ella Grasso to the State Board of Accountancy and reappointed by three succeeding Governors, serving two terms as Chairman. In the 1960's, he began jogging every day. His running partners kept count: at one point, Bernie had run half way around the equator. The milestone didn't stop him. He kept running, and when he could not run, he walked, and he'd be running today if he could. He never greeted any challenge without optimism, a smile, and the confidence that things could be turned for the better. That was how he lived his life to the very last. He could have worked in any profession, but people would have told you the same thing: "Here was a man you could count on." Bernie will be missed forever by his wife, Helen (Karotkin) Blum; by his sister Anne Honiberg; by his seven grandchildren, Alexis Maislen, daughter of Alan Maislen and Mara Blum Maislen of West Hartford; Noah, Joshua and Ariel Blum, children of Dr. Jerrold E. and Arlene Blum of Bloomfield; and Keith, David and Matthew Blum, sons of Steven Z. Blum and Beth K. Blum of West Hartford. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 10 at 2 p.m. in the Sanctuary of Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Avenue, West Hartford with Rabbi James Rosen, Rabbi Stanley M. Kessler and Cantor Joseph Ness officiating. Interment will follow in Beth El Temple Cemetery, Jackson St., Avon. Shiva will be observed at his home, 132 Balbrae, Bloomfield, Friday until sundown, Saturday evening at 7 p.m., Sunday from 1-8:30 p.m. and Monday from 1 p.m. until sundown, because of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bernard Blum Fund, established by his firm to award scholarships to accounting students, c/o Lori Rabb, Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, 10 Columbus Boulevard, Hartford, CT 06106. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford. For further information, directions, or to share memories of Bernie with his family, please visit online at www. weinsteinmortuary.com.

Dear Helen and family,
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Bernie's passing. He has taken care of our family since I was a teenager. I know he will be missed by many. I add my name to that list.
I remember my mother saying "you never have to worry about an inspection by the IRS if Bernie did your taxes". Your loss is shared by many.

I first met Bernie in about 2000 at the JCC and eventually learned that he was my father's childhood friend from Hartford. Within weeks Bernie had me running with him daily. Although I always hated running and still do, it was an honor and a pleasure to run with Bernie.
Bernie always looked out for me and always reminded me to stay healthy for my kids.
When Bernie attended my son's Bar Mitzvah two years ago, I was delighted.
Bernie, I'll miss you.

Bernie was a friend, not only to me, but to everyone he came in contact with here at the JCC, both members and staff. He had a way of making us all feel glad for the chance to make the most of a new day. The Center will not be the same without him, but he will live in the hearts and memories of those whose lives he touched.

Dear Helen,
After reading the obituary on your husband, Bernie, I understand why you spoke so respectfully of him on the many occasions that we were walking companions at the Mall. I am truly saddened by your loss, as well as the loss to the entire community. God bless you.

I am saddened by the death of Bernie. I got to know him during his tenure on the State Board of Accountancy. He was always open to comments and at time criticisms of what the State Board was doing. I enjoyed our talks about the whole certification process and the related concerns I had.

A few years ago I became the Internatoinal Chair for a year for the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). Bernie, who was a former board member, called me when he heard I had been elected and said that he was in awe of what I had done. The truth is, I was in awe of him.

My condolences to his family he was a great man and will be missed.

It is impossible to know how many lives Bernie has touched and made better. Our regular conversations, though brief and often while walking through the courtyard at Town Center, were highlights in a normal day. I offer prayers for Bernie and his family...

My Dad, Bob Love, was a courier for Blum Shapiro for many years and always spoke of the wonderful conversations he had with Mr. Blum. I think they were very similar men-kind, honorable and loving. It will soon be a year since we lost my Dad, and I hope he is right now having a great talk with Bernie Blum. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

To All Readers mourning the loss of Bernard Blum:

To say that Bernie was, still “is” to me, a remarkable man is a huge understatement.

More recently, Bernie had been extremely active in the financial planning/investment advisory community and was a member of a local fee-only planner study group of which I am also a member.

Bernie's contributions to the study group were always valuable and insightful. He could get the core of an issue right-away in his straight-forward way. Heck, while I was Bernie's junior by at least 30 years, I often wondered how he maintained his boundless energy.

We've all heard about doing something that you love and that the other necessary aspects of your life will follow. This was the essence of Bernie. There's only one more aspect of Bernie that could supercede the aforestated: Integrity. Bernie was an emblematic example of integrity.

One final point, which I believe will, hopefully, provide more perspective about Bernie with some humor. I used to kid him about how many designations he had earned having earned quite a few myself. However, Bernie probably had twice as many me and told a story several times about how he had to cull them down so that "they could fit on a business card."

To recap, I believe anyone that worked with, served with and/or knew Bernie will miss him terribly, however, they will feel incredibly fortunate to have known him and have been influenced by him.

Bernie was the quintessential gentleman in business and his personal life. I remember the day he read me my passing grades for the CPA exam that he had early access to -- that was 25 years ago. I will miss seeing him at the EBPC meetings.
