Carl Breaux Obituary

Carl T. Breaux, of Cromwell, beloved husband of Debbie (Pierce) Breaux, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Carl was born on October 3, 1931, to the late Sydney and Cora Lee (Martinez) Breaux, in Plaquemine, LA, one of what would be seven children. His mother and her sister, Anna, were very close and given the difficulties at the time, he was raised in New Orleans by his aunt and uncle, Anna (Martinez) and Albert Diermeyer-Mama and Papa, as they were known. They, too, had seven children, so there was always lots of love and activity at 4920 Laurel Street-an address forever etched in Carl's heart. In many ways, Carl was very fortunate to have had the love of two special families. A Korean War Veteran, Carl had enlisted in the Air Force upon his graduation from Redemptorist High School, in New Orleans. Following basic training at Boise AFB in Idaho, he decided he wanted more of a challenge--a decision that led him to complete Jumpmaster training at Fort Benning, GA. From there he was assigned active duty with the 582nd Air Rescue team at, what was then, Molesworth AFB in England, where he served for two years. Upon his discharge in Minnesota, he completed his degree at Minneapolis Business College and was hired by The Hartford Insurance Group as a Premium Auditor. That career led him from Minneapolis to St. Louis, back to New Orleans, and finally to Hartford, where he retired in 1997, after 39 years of service to the company. While at The Hartford, Carl had acquired the nickname of "Numbers Man"; so, true to form, after retiring, he began working for H&R Block as a tax preparer during Tax season. He also volunteered for the IRS to prepare taxes for senior citizens and the Veterans at the Newington Veterans Home. Carl was an avid golfer and when it came time to hang up his clubs, he enjoyed watching the "pros" on the Golf Channel, always routing for his favorite: Phil Michelson. He loved his family and was so proud of his sons. He would often say, "My sons can do anything!" Sadly, Carl was predeceased by one of his sons, David, as well as by his brother, Robert, and his Diermeyer sisters and brothers: Albert, Hubert, Anna, Catherine, Shirley, Rita, and Roma. Carl is survived by his brother, Sydney Breaux (Barbara), of Plaquemine, LA; sisters: Patricia Rivet, of Baton Rouge, LA, Rosemary Provencal (Phil), of Gonzalez, LA, Nancy Barthelmy (Lynn), of Slidell, LA, and Theresa Gautreaux (Billie), of Baton Rouge, LA; his sons, Michael Breaux (Theresa), of So. Windsor, CT, Steven Breaux (Jo Ann), of Port Byron, IL, and Alan Breaux (Keli), of Colchester, CT; his grandchildren: Nicole Cawley (Scott), of Amston, CT, Michael Breaux, of Tolland, CT, Catherine Breaux, of So. Windsor, CT, Kristen Breaux, of Port Byron, IL, Kaitlyn Breaux, of WI, Kimberly Breaux, of Port Byron, IL, and Paige Breaux, of Colchester, CT; his great-grandchildren: Logan and Wyatt Cawley, and Sedi and Charlotte Breaux-Beydler; and by many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 18, at 10:00 am, at St. John's Church in Cromwell. Burial will follow in the State Veterans' Cemetery in Middletown where full military honors will be accorded. Family and friends may call on Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, at the Cromwell Funeral Home, 506 Main St., Cromwell. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Carl's memory to Building Homes For Heroes, 65 Roosevelt Ave., Suite 105, Valley Stream, NY 11581, or to St. John's Church, 5 St. John's Ct,, Cromwell, CT 06416. I worked at the Hartford with Carol on a computer project in the late 1980's. We all found him to be professional, extremely helpful and knowledgeable and a very nice person.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this very sad time.

Sincerely,
Sue and Jim Swol

I remember Carl from working at The Hartford as a young 18 year old right out of business school! I was so fortunate to have him as a mentor and was lucky and honored to be at his retirement party in the atrium back in 1997. It was and still is the greatest celebration I ever seen given by our Sr. leadership team. I will never forget that day for as long as I live and I will never forget Carl! He was a true gentleman and someone I was thankful to call my friend! My sincere condolences to Debbie and all of Carl's family and friends! Rest in peace, my friend!
