In 1990, I lost all my real estate investments in the economic crash

of that time and filed for bankruptcy. Among my debts were thousands of

dollars owed South Windsor in property taxes on my home. At one of the

most stressful times in my life, life was made more bearable by dealing

with the professionalism and humanity of the Town of South Windsor

Tax Collector, Ed Moniz. There was not a time that Ed didn’t make himself

available to me no matter how ridiculous or sometimes incessant my questions.

There wasn’t a time I saw him in his office or at Armata’s or Geissler’s where

he made me feel like a deadbeat. At all times he was friendly, respectful,

and as many have said, ever cheerful. He was also faithful to his duties.

After 4 years I was able to pay the tax arrearage and accrued

interest in full. In some way, I feel Ed enabled myself and my family to

stay in the home we had lived in for years and still do. My children have

almost completed their schooling in South Windsor. We continue to keep

our taxes current as we always did before 1990.

And I will always remember Ed Moniz as the man who worked with me

so our family could keep our home. He will not be forgotten.

Ed was our insurance agent when I lived in Wethersfield. At the time, I was married to my first husband. I also knew Ed from working in the Wethersfield Tax Collector's Office with Bob Johnson. Ed was someone who was always smiling. He also gave up his room for me at a seminar in Norwich in 1980. My registration form had been misplaced. He ended up rooming with Bob Johnson. He was a very nice man. I am very sorry for your loss.

I met Ed when he taught my first Tax Collector class. He made learning fun through his experiences, stories, and remembrances. He had a ready smile whenever I saw him at a meeting and, despite the number of people he had taught, he made me know that he remembered me as a person. We are made less by the loss of his presence.
