Ian Prout Obituary

Ian Uppercu Prout of Deep River, Connecticut, passed peacefully into the eternal, loving hands of God on April 9, 2016, with infinite love in his heart for all those he loved and all those who loved him. Born on March 30, 1972, in Greenwich, Connecticut, Ian spent his childhood in Essex riding his bike, playing and laughing with his sister and friends, and enjoying his summers surrounded by the natural splendors of the Connecticut River. His generosity and beauty of spirit were evidenced in all he did. As a beloved son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, boyfriend, and friend, Ian is eternally loved beyond words. All who knew Ian were touched by his sense of humor and spirit, and now understand that the true definition of a successful life is not measured in the passage of years, but rather in the capacity to love and care for one another while we are here. Ian is survived by his adoring parents, Elizabeth Leonard Prout and William Willett Prout, Jr.; his beloved sister and brother-in-law, Ashley Prout McAvey and Ken McAvey of Shelburne, Vermont, and their children, Ian's cherished niece and nephew, Elle Uppercu McAvey and Reid Kenneth McAvey; and the love of his life, Liz Thompson of Essex, Connecticut. In addition, he is survived by his treasured friends, cousins, aunts and uncles, devoted customers, and esteemed race car drivers, all far too many to list. Ian graduated from Deerfield Academy and Union College before pouring his life's passion for race car driving into the creation of his vibrant business, The Sports Car Driving Association. His business gives people of all abilities and backgrounds the opportunity to enjoy the thrill and fun of driving their cars on the most prestigious race tracks in New England in a safe and controlled environment. The friendships and bonds that were formed through more than two decades spent masterfully building and nurturing his business will be just one more of Ian's glorious lasting legacies. Next to showering his family and friends with love and kindness, Ian's favorite passion was using his God-given talent to race cars, win races, and set track records. He delighted in giving his signed checkered flags to his niece and nephew. He holds five lap records at three different tracks, including his all-time favorite track, Watkins Glen, as well as at Lime Rock Park and Thompson. The thrill and pride he brought to his family, both on and off the racetrack, are etched permanently in their hearts. To celebrate the deep gratitude we have to God for sharing this remarkable man with us, we will gather at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Essex, Connecticut at 11am on Friday, April 29, 2016. All are welcome to attend this and the parish hall reception immediately following the mass. A private family burial will be held immediately after the mass after which the family will join the reception. To share your memories of Ian with his family, please email [email protected]. To honor his indomitable and magnificent spirit, we invite you to make a gift to your favorite charity or to The Ian Prout Legacy Fund which will expressly support people aspiring to follow their dreams of racing as well as those in need of emotional support in this precious and beautiful life. Details on The Ian Prout Legacy Fund will be forthcoming at www.scda1.com.

I'm sad for the passing of Ian. I will always remember his smile and enthusiasm at the track. I was just getting back into track driving in the early 2000s and I got into BMW Club racing. I have 2 two vivid memories that made a 'connection' with Ian. One was at Lime Rock Park and I was trying to stick with him on No Name Straight (PL Newman Straight). We were in E30 M3s. Ian went around another car in front, and as he approached the uphill, he was totally out of shape. He must have been close to full lock counter steer, and he kept his foot planted on the gas. It was one of the best on-track moments of my life. And we know that was typical driving for Ian. He was just driving the car. No big deal. Of course, he brought the car under control smoothly and went on down the course. I never caught up to him. The other connection was when he complimented me on my driving at the Glen. I was a mid-pack runner, and to have an unsolicited compliment from Ian put me over the moon. I wish the best to Ian's family and friends. Thank you, Elivan and Team for continuing the legacy.

Dear Ian,

I wish I had known you for you were an amazing human being. I do though know you through Ashley with whom I have connected. We share an unfortunate bond of loss but together we are stronger and feel your spirit and that of my brother Bruce who left this earthly plane when he was just 22. The pain endures but so does the spirit which is forever..Rest in Peace.....

A great fellow alum from H.S., Ian was quick to step-up and help me support U.S. schools via Stokes Foundation. He put our website on the trunk of his ride and we discussed charity racing events down the road. Sadly, his energy is no longer here but hopefully we can all, in our own way, honor his memory by caring about others and stepping up to serve.

Dear Ann and Bill,
I am so sorry about Ian. He was such an adorable and special little boy. It was a joy to see him, Ashley and Tonya play up on Budney Hill. I still have pictures of the kids together.
My heart goes out to you both and Ashley and your family.
Sincerely, Sandy Tollefsen Lemley

We are so saddened to learn of Ian's passing and trust that he has found peace, now in the presence of his God. I met Ian through his SCDA organization and instantly found him to be a great person. Beyond his love of racing and his skill, he was very kind and personable. Despite my novice driver skills, he always had a few words of encouragement and guidance for me. He was also very warm and welcoming to my daughter, who came with me on a few SCDA track days. Our prayers are with Ian and his family.

All our family is saddened by by Ian's too early passing. My son Tim, daughter Dini, wife Dagmar and I all knew Ian well and always enjoyed being with him.
For me his patient tutelage driving my beloved GT 40 at Lime Rock and especially Watkins Glen will always be remembered fondly. Unfortunately, I was one of his failures: I realized early I'd better stick to my day job because my future as a racecar driver was clearly hopeless.
Our condolences to all of Ian's family.

Ian was one of those guys you meet & get to know, (if you're lucky in life), and then you somewhat kiddingly say to yourself.."Man, when I grow up, I wanna' be like him!" There aren't enough words in the language to really describe him. Here's a few though: He was unique. He was kind. He was generous. He was witty. He was talented. He was talented. Oh, and he was so very talented. I like him, I admire him, I respect him, and I miss him. If the Man above wasn't much of a Road Course Racer before....He will be soon. This is truly a deep loss that's being felt far & wide, across many, many communities. In memory of #40.
