Janice Carlson Obituary

Janice Carlson spent her life caring for others. Local children, as both an elementary and pre-school teacher. Her parents, as they reached old age. A small, but close, circle of friends she maintained for decades. Her husband, Paul, of 43 years and her children, Chris and Jeff, as they navigated their lives. Jan, 75, died peacefully in her West Hartford home on Wednesday, July, 6 from cancer. Born in Hartford, Conn. on Oct. 10, 1946, to Louise and Russell Risley, Jan graduated from Central Connecticut State University and went on to become a teacher in the Wethersfield school system, teaching at Emerson Williams Elementary School. She met her husband, Paul, on a blind date in 1977, introduced by a mutual friend. They married just over a year later and were blessed with a loving marriage and family. Janice eventually retired to raise their two boys. Their homework became her homework. Their joy became her pride. Jeff is a successful accountant who lives in West Hartford. Chris is a surviving newspaper journalist in Syracuse. She enjoyed looking after her home, yard and garden, as well as lunches and phone calls with a small group of lifelong friends, and caring for her family. In her final days of hospice care, Jan spent her time writing thank-you notes and managing to still dote on and enjoy her family, as she had done for decades. Jan was pre-deceased by her parents, Russell and Louise. She leaves behind her husband (Paul), sons (Chris and Jeff), a sister (Holly), two daughters-in-law (Julie and Asya), two grandchildren (Maya and Max) who she loved to watch play and grow, a nephew (Matthew) and a niece (Kristen) and that legacy of kindness. We will miss her so much and always be grateful for her gentle and thoughtful way. The family will hold a life celebration at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children or the American Cancer Society. Duksa Family Funeral Homes at Newington Memorial, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington is serving her family. To share a condolence, please visit us at www.duksa.net.

I think of Janice so often. It gives me comfort to know she is with her husband and parents and that she at peace knowing her sons are with loving spouses and raising their offspring. She so loved her grandchildren. I was so thankful and honored to be invited to her tribute last year. It gave me the chance to meet everyone who was near and dear to her and especially to meet her husband in person. She certainly loved him and her life. Until we meet again Janice...know I truly miss you

Thank you all who have responded! Janice was so special to myself, Chris, Jeff, Asya, Julie, Maya and Max. She taught us to love and how to love! Our love and grief is everlasting and our memories are of a wonderful girl who cared for all. Three days before she passed she told Asya "My life has been so blessed". My life has been so blessed by my marriage to Jan and the wonderful caring family and friends we have shared God bless you all!

To Paul, Chris and Jeff and entire family,
I send to you my condolences to you all. Janice and I were friends since the first grade. She was a good friend, so kind and it was so obvious she loved her life and her family. She was so proud of all of you. I am going to miss our luncheons when we all got together to share our lives and talk about good memories. We recently had the opportunity to verbalize how important our friendship was to one another. My hope is that your many fond memories help you to get thru your grief and that your faith and love for each other gives you hope and peace. God Bless You. I have no doubt Janice is in heaven and so proud of you all.

A life long friendship of 55 years began when Jan and I attended classes together in college as Elementary Education majors. We connected over the years with frequent phone calls and visits with our families, always supporting each other in times of difficulty and joy. We were blessed with
celebrating our 75th birthdays together with our husbands for several fun days at the Copper Beach Inn in Ivoryton, CT.
last August. Jan was a beautiful person and wonderful friend! I will miss her so very much!
