John Abate Obituary

John Allen "Johnny" Abate, age 67, of South Windsor, CT., passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at Kimberly Hall, Windsor with his children Brie and Jesse at his bedside. He was born in Hartford, on November 22, 1955. John was predeceased by his parents Dominick Sr., and Loretta (McNeil) Abate.

John grew up in the South End of Hartford where he became a force to be reckoned with on the basketball court. His love of music began early and lasted throughout his life. John was an accomplished percussionist and carried that rhythm with him every time he stepped out onto a dance floor. He was an avid traveler; John especially loved his trips to Las Vegas and New York City. He enjoyed good food, good company and good times. John had an infectious laugh, a zest for life, and a smile that lit up the room.

John was a long-time employee of the Town of Ellington and the City of Hartford Recreation Department where he shared his love and skill of basketball and music with countless young people throughout the City of Hartford.

John is survived by his children, Brie Abate, Jesse Abate (Catherine), Evan Abate; his grandchildren, Kayla Daley, Alexis Sozzani, Gabriella Sozzani, Jordyn Abate, Khai Abate, and Adonis Abate; his great-grandchildren, Natalie Barletta, Giovanni Desorbo, and Vincenzo Desorbo; and his two favorite ladies Jo Matos and Ceil Gersten. John leaves his sister, June Cook and brother Robert Abate (Lisa), many nieces and nephews, friends and his dog "Logan". John was predeceased by his brother, Dominick Abate Jr.; his brother-in-law, Douglas Cook and his nephew, Jason Abate.

Johnny, my heart is broken but am glad you are at peace. You were the one who would walk my home from Goodwin Park when we were 14, to make sure i got home safely on your way to Dutch Point. My song for you is "Really Gonna Miss You" by Smokey Robinson. If you all listen to it you will feel the same, whether a friend or family. Love, Debbie DiBella Wilcox and Guy Wilcox xoxo
