John Carragher Obituary

CARRAGHER, Brig. Gen. John P. (Ret) Brigadier General John Peter Carragher (US Army Ret) 70, of Newington, beloved husband of Kathleen (Burgen) Carragher, died peacefully March 18, 2008. Born in Hartford to the late John and Alice (Regan) Carragher, he graduated from Hartford Public High School and attended Syracuse University, the University of Connecticut and proudly earned his bachelor's degree from Eastern Connecticut State University in 1994. Jack was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly in 1967, serving the people of the Parkville Section of Hartford for one term before accepting the position of General Manager of Vadnais Lumber Company in Springfield, MA. Jack entered military service in 1958 and, after six years in the enlisted ranks, was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in 1964. Jack served in various leadership positions in the Connecticut Army National Guard's 169th Infantry Battalion including platoon leader, company commander, and administrative officer. In November 1980, he assumed command of his beloved "Iron Grays", the 1st Battalion, 102nd Infantry. On May 7, 1982, he was named Assistant Adjutant General by then Governor William A. O'Neill and promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. Jack retired from military service on September 28, 1994. He was awarded numerous military decorations and awards during his service including the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and the Connecticut Medal of Merit. During his 30 plus year military career, he never forgot where he started and will always be remembered as a 'Soldiers General'. Jack was also very involved in service to his community. Along with his wife, he lived and raised his family in Newington. He proudly served on the Newington Democratic Town Committee and was a member of the Democratic State Central Committee, serving the 9th Senatorial District. He also served as Chairman of the Newington Charter Revision Commission, Economic Development Commission, and Housing Authority and as a member of the Connecticut Travel and Tourism Board. Jack will also be remembered for his passionate commitment to those who made the supreme sacrifice in defense of our great Nation. He served as chairman of the Newington Memorial Day Parade Committee, organizing one of the largest and best Memorial Day parades in the State. He was a parishioner of Saint Mary's church in Newington. In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by his five children, John Carragher and his wife Lucy of Southington, Stephen Carragher and his wife Debra of Hebron, Kevin Carragher and his wife Laura of Newington, Amy Carragher of Wethersfield, and Michael Carragher of Wethersfield, eight grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jack is also survived by his brother and best friend, Bob Carragher and his wife Barbara of Venice, FL. His family will receive relatives and friends in the Fisette-Batzner Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Av. Newington, CT 06489 at Newington Memorial, MONDAY, March 24, from 4 - 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, March 25, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Willard Avenue, Newington. Interment, with full military honors, will be in West Meadow Cemetery in Newington. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to the Newington Memorial Day Parade Committee, c/o Webster Bank, 1120 Main St., Newington, CT 06111.

We are only transients in this world.
From birth to death, from reveille to taps, we journey between the eternities.
I am proud to have journeyed with Jack and privileged to have call him friend.

Dad: Before I do anything in life, I always stop and ask myself, "What would Dad do?" If I am lucky enough to guess correctly, it usually works out for the best. I will always love you and please know that everything I do in life will always be done the right way. I wish you were able to know Deb, Nathan and Benjamin! Don't worry about Mom, we'll take care of her.

Your loving son.

Dear Dad,

I read all of the wonderful entries on this website and it made me even more honored that you are my Dad.

I loved that you cried at weddings because you were so happy that the couple in front of you would have the chance to have a life like yours. I loved that you lead me by the back of my neck when I was in trouble and when you just walked with me. I loved that I could tell you anything and you would not judge. I loved that you were warm and stern at the most appropriate times. I loved that I could always count on you. I loved that you didn't bail me out when I got into trouble but were always there to help me get through difficult times in my life. I loved that you were such a kind man and always wanted to help anyone you could. I loved that my friends were afraid of you but knew always that they could come to you for support. I loved that you loved whole-heartedly and unconditionally. I loved that you were fair with each and every one of us kids and grandkids. I loved that you instilled love, loyalty, and laughter into my life. But most of all I loved being your daughter. You will always be in my thoughts…everyday. You know I wear my heart on my sleeve just like you so please keep me strong and dry my eyes.

I love you Dad.

Forever your daughter…..Aim

Our deepest sympathies to Steve and Amy and the rest of the Carragher family.

Here is a special poem in hopes that it will bring you all a little comfort.

God looked around his garden
And found an empty place.
He then looked down upon the earth,
And saw your tired face.
He put His arms around you
And lifted you to rest.
God’s garden must be beautiful
He always takes the best.
He knew you were suffering
He knew you were in pain
He knew you would never
Get well on earth again.
He saw the road was getting rough,
And hills were hard to climb.
So he closed your weary eyelids
And whispered “Peace be thine”
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn’t go alone
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.

Kathleen & Your Wonderful Family:

There are so many great memories of Jack that we all have about
Election Day, The Memorial Day Parade, The Sheriffs/Marshals Dept.,
the Armory & the Guard, anything Irish but, most of all family.

Election Day started out at the Olympia for breakfast with the guys and then he would procede to headquarters where he would
make sure everything was done. We were all dressed casually but Jack was in a Suit &Tie, with the Courant under his arm and a "Susan let the games begin". No nonsense while recording those numbers, or making phone calls. He was the General after all.

Kathleen was known as " The Bride" or " the Ceramic Lady". We all spent time on Forest Drive and were treated like family. Jack was especially good to my Dad and every Veterans Day Jack would have him as his special guest at the V.A.lunch.

Jack was very good to alot of people and always ready to take on anything that would make someone's life a little better.

He'll be missed, but his wonderful family will continue to carry on the Carragher Tradition.

We were lucky to have him in our lives and he now has the peace and serenity he so richly deserves.

God Bless you all, Kathleen, Amy, Kevin, Steven, Michael. You have
been there all the way. How proud he was of all of you and with very good reason.

You're in our hearts and prayers.

My deepest sympathy goes out the Carragher family. My fondest memories of the General was during the time of Gov. Dempsey's funeral. I had the the distinct pleasure and opportunity as a recruiter to serve as a member of the honor guard and work closely with him. Under the somber circumstances at that particular time he lightened the moment by ranking on some of the junior officers that were on sight. He had us all in stiches. He was a good man and his contributions to the CT. GUARD will not be forgotten.
