John McKelvey Obituary

John Joseph McKelvey "Jack Mac" passed away peacefully on Monday, November 14, 2016 surrounded by his family after a brief illness in the VITAS Unit at Saint Mary's Hospital. He was the devoted husband of Patricia (Carpentieri) McKelvey. Jack was born in Waterbury, son of the late Chester and Catherine (Farrell) McKelvey and grew up in Waterville. He was educated at St. Thomas School and E.C. Goodwin Technical High School. Jack was a proud U.S. Army veteran and served his country during the Korean War, stationed in Italy, France, and Germany. Upon his return from service, Jack was employed at Scovill Manufacturing/Century Brass in Waterbury for over twenty years. He, then, went to work for the State of Connecticut where he worked as a supervisor in the maintenance department at Southbury Training School. Jack was a self-proclaimed Irish Catholic Democrat. An eternal optimist, Jack loved life and took nothing for granted. He was the epitome of a family man and a friend to all. He adored his wife and daughters and his pride and joy were his grandchildren, Catherine, John, and Molly. He cherished the time he spent with his family. He loved attending his grandchildren's games and performances, playing cards, going to the beach, caring for the birds, maintaining the condo, going out for breakfast, and stopping at Dunkin Donuts for coffee. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the UCONN Men's and Women's Basketball teams. In addition to Patricia, his wife of 49 years, Jack is survived by his daughters, Michele and daughter in law, Jill of West Hartford, and Nicole and son in law Chris of Prospect. Jack also leaves his grandchildren Catherine Walsh, John Walsh and Molly McKelvey as well as his nieces and nephews, extended family and many friends. He was predeceased by his brothers Francis McKelvey, Edward McKelvey, William McKelvey and James McKelvey and his best friend, Jimmy Burns. Jack's family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to CT Kidney and Hypertension Specialty, VITAS Hospice team, the doctors, nurses and staff at the Leever Center, Nan Bergamo, R.N., Dr. Kert Sabbath, and Dr. Anthony Kim for their outstanding care and compassion shown to Jack and family while under their care. A special thanks to Dr. Marc Ciampi for his gentle, loving care. The funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 9:30am at St. Bridget's Church, 175 Main St., Cheshire. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at church. Burial with full military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Jack's name may be made to: VA Medical Center of West Haven, 950 Campbell Ave., West Haven, CT 06516. Maiorano Funeral Home has been entrusted with all arrangements.
