John Powers Obituary

POWERS, John A. On May 23rd, Jack, 82, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his beloved family, having fought a tenacious four year battle with Myeloma. Throughout his illness Jack never lost the dignity, gallant courage, or determination that so marked his life. He is deeply mourned by his loving wife of 47 years, Eileen, and by their children, Cecilia Owen and Jennifer Powers. From his previous marriage, he is survived by John Powers, Jr. and Maribeth Moody. Born in New York, Jack served his country in World War II and later graduated from St. Peter's College. During his career in advertising, Jack served as President of McCann-Erickson in Europe and America, ultimately leaving that post to become the Chairman and COO of Heublein, Inc., now Diageo. He served on various boards and dedicated himself to charitable interests, particularly in education and medicine. Devoted to family and friends, Jack's life was shaped by perseverance. We will remember his integrity, his business acumen and his enchantment with his family and grandchildren. Jack was a memorable presence, with limitless vitality and a keen intellect, who sought challenges in every aspect of life. Friends knew him to be engaging, loyal, and unflagging in his support. Jack possessed just enough knowledge about power tools to be dangerous, and his legendary repair projects are the stuff of family lore. He will not be forgotten. A memorial service will be held in New York on Wednesday (June 10, 2009) at 4 p.m. at St. Vincent Ferrer, 869 Lexington Avenue. In his memory, donations may be made to Jack's endowment to Pain and Palliative Care Service (Attn: Dr. Kathleen M. Foley) at MSKCC, 1275 York Avenue, New York, NY 10021.

Our dear friend, Jack Powers, Jr., lost his father, who he deeply loved and will greatly miss. We are sorry for the Powers family, for if Jack Powers, Sr. was any reflection of his own son, there is surely reason to deeply mourn.

Mr. Powers was adored by his daughter, Maribeth Moody. As a college classmate and a lifelong friend, my hope is that Maribeth finds comfort in the knowledge that she was a devoted daughter and always dearly loved by her father. May his memory be eternal.
