John Scully Obituary

John P. Scully, 62, of the Elmwood section of West Hartford, died Saturday afternoon at the UCONN John Dempsey Medical Center in Farmington. He passed after over a decade battle with various forms of cancer. The son of the late James and Elizabeth (Mangan) Scully, John was born in Hartford and attended St. Brigid grammar school in West Hartford where he graduated with the class of 1969. He attended Northwest Catholic High School in West Hartford and graduated in May of 1973. The following August he began his undergraduate work at Providence College in Rhode Island and earned a degree in accounting in 1977. Nicknamed "The Chief" when he was in college because of the Chicago Black Hawks jersey he proudly wore. He then put his degree to work as an accountant and auditor for various financial companies in the Hartford area. Over his 25 year career he worked for The Aetna, The Zurich Corporation and other independent firms. An avid sports fan, he faithfully followed the progress of his Providence Friars in all sports. He also was a fan of Notre Dame and Clemson athletic teams, the New York Mets, and the New York Football Giants. He also followed horse racing, especially during the Triple Crown season. John is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, James and Noreen Scully, of Avon, and two sisters, Patricia Scully and her significant other Gerald Jewiss of Crystal River, FL, and Sr. Theresina Scully, C.P. of Providence, RI; his nephew James Scully of New York City, his niece Kristen Wilson and her family of Mt. Vernon, NH and his best friend since childhood, Tim Bourret of Clemson, SC. Funeral procession will be Wednesday, (April 26), 9:15 am from the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10:00 am at St. Brigid Church in West Hartford. Burial will be in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Calling hours will be Tuesday, (April 25), from 4 to 7 pm at the funeral home. The family would like to thank the UCONN Oncology Unit for their compassionate care given to John. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Brigid Catholic School, 100 Mayflower Street, West Hartford, CT, 06110. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com.

I met John during our our freshman year at Northwest Catholic High School where we played intramural basketball. You never saw John without a smile on his face and something funny to say. He was the type of person that you felt comfortable with right from the beginning because of his honesty and friendly nature. The world is a little darker with your passing, rest in peace.

On behalf of President/Chief Administrator David Eustis and the entire Northwest Catholic High School community, I offer my deepest sympathy on the passing of John P. Scully. As a graduate of the Class of 1973 and brother of Sr. Theresina Scully, C.P. '66, John will be remembered in our community's prayers. We are very sorry for your loss.

John was my dear friend since the first day of our freshman year at Northwest Catholic High School. Up to as recently as this month, he would call me to say "hello" and open the conversation with his favorite salutation to me.."Hello, you turkey you!" He made me smile, he made me laugh, and I adored him. I will miss him so much... a very good man an an even better friend. I love you, Chief... be at peace. Beth Lichtenfels Veihmeyer

One of my closest friends from St. Brigid, to Northwest Catholic, to Providence College. Many fond memories of playing pool with John and his Dad after school. Also great memories of weekends with John and Pat at the lake house and bowling at Connecticut General.

John, you were a good friend. It was great to see you at the Fernwood last month after all those years. I'm sad
your time was cut short. Rest in peace and keep everyone in heaven laughing.

My condolences to the Scilly family .
