Louis "Gino" Sambuco

1931 - 2023

After a brief illness Gino passed away at St. Francis Hospital on April 4, 2023. A native of Hartford, born March 3, 1931, he was the second of five children of Louis Sambuco and Jenny Mondazzi. Being in love with music at an early age, he and his brother John both studied the violin and played in the family orchestra with their father and sister Olga. After graduating from Weaver High School, he entered the Juilliard School of Music in New York City as a scholarship student. After earning a Bachelor of Music degree, he joined the New Orleans Symphony. Moving to New York City, he became the assistant concert master of the orchestra at Radio City Music Hall. When Leonard Bernstein called for auditions for the New York Philharmonic, Gino auditioned and won a position in the orchestra. He performed under the leadership of Bernstein and many other world renowned conductors, all the while teaching at the Rudolph Steiner School and Hofstra University. He also formed his own string quartet and played concerts at Music Mountain. He is survived by his sisters Alice Sambuco, Louise Sambuco-Presutti, nephews Richard and Robert Presutti, niece Lisa Presutti-Holland, and his brother-in-law Bruno Amato. Friends and family may call on Tuesday, April 11, from 6-8 p.m. at the Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave. West Hartford. A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, April 12 at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Timothy, 1116 N. Main St. West Hartford. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford.
