Luke Strand Obituary

The Boston Red Sox lost one of their most loyal fans on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 when Luke Stephen Strand, 24, left us far too soon. Luke was the epitome of a renaissance man. With a deep love for his family, his animals, sports (playing AND watching), music (playing AND listening), mathematics (can anyone really play at math?), politics & world events, Luke could carry on an engaging conversation with anyone. He will be remembered by everybody with whom he interacted for his sweet, sensitive soul. It's hard to have to say goodbye to someone so young, but Luke can rest easy knowing he left us better off for having known him. Luke quickly became known as our Boston boy, where he loved to host his friends and family, go to innumerable Red Sox games, and solve complicated math equations. As a student at Boston University, he began to work at Ecco Pizzeria, and quickly realized he had a passion for the culinary arts. He enjoyed his time at Ecco, Upper Crust, and Stone and Paddle. One of his family's favorite last memories of him was coming into the house and smelling the incredible meal that he just "whipped up" while blasting the music that meant so much to him. Luke will be greatly missed by his loving mom, Maureen Leyes; father, Stephen Strand and his wife Karen of Manchester; and his loving sister, Rebekah. He also leaves his very special aunt, Kathy Strand, his paternal grandmother, Beverly Strand, many aunts, uncles, cousins, stepsisters, and Brian McDuffee, whom he was so excited to call a "brother". Luke was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Rev. Burton Strand and maternal grandparents, Joseph and Margaret Leyes. Luke attended Center Road School in Vernon, St. James in Manchester, and was a 2011 graduate of Xavier High School in Middletown, CT. As the teacher's pet, he will be remembered by the educators that he enlightened for the rest of their lives. Fitz and Fenway, his lovable canine companions also mourn his loss. He now joins his childhood dogs, Nicholas and Zoey. Calling hours are Wednesday, December 27, from 4-7 p.m. at Holmes-Watkins Funeral Home, 400 Main Street Manchester. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 28, at 10:30 a.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church, 40 Pitkin Street, Manchester. The Rev. John Corgan and Rev. Douglas Barclay will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Jordan Porco Foundation, https://www.rememberingjordan.org/support-us/donate/, or Sadie Mae Foundation Animal Rescue League Incorporated P.O. Box 9323 Bolton, CT 06043.

Dear Maureen, Sending the kind of hug that only another mother that has lost a son can. I am a friend of Marisa's & I just learned of your beautiful, smart, gentle, talented, kind boy. He sounds like a gift to all that were fortunate enough to have known him. I am so sorry for his suffering and for your loss. Hold tight to your faith, as they all say, it has helped me tremendously. Be gentle with yourself & let those that love you take care of you & yours. Your beautiful Luke is now with some of the kindest, most athletic, smartest, deepest loving souls I have ever known. Please know that you will never be alone on this unwanted journey. We are right here for you whenever you are ready. With the deepest kind of love & light.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Dear Maureen, I was so saddened to hear of the loss of your beloved Luke. No words will ever take away the pain you are feeling. Take comfort in knowing that the Lord will ease your pain, and that one day you will be reunited with your son. I can empathize with you because I know that one day I too will be reunited with my little Mark, who went home to be with the Lord way too soon. God love, comfort, and bless you and your family. Love, Debbie and Jason

Maureen, Rebekah, and Steve,

Words cannot even begin to describe how sorry I am for your loss of a son and brother. I will always remember Luke as one of my favorite students at Center Road School. He was respectful, showed wonderful sportsmanship, and was a great athlete. We both shared a love of the Red Sox and I am proud to say that Luke was in my physical education classes. Lukes memory will live on in all of us and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Maureen, Rebekah, and Steve,

Words cannot express the sadness I feel at hearing this news. Please know so many people are thinking of you and praying for you. I remember when Luke was born. I also remember teaching him in Sunday school. He was adorable, smart, and full of laughter. I am happy to have those memories of him, and I know many people also have great memories. We will be thinking of you during this difficult time and in the time to come.

Grief is the last act of love we can give to those we loved. Where there is deep grief, there was great love.

Dear Maureen, Steve, & Rebekah,
We are heartbroken over the passing of your dear son & brother. We are so very sorry for your tremendous loss. The adorable little boy we knew all those years ago at Concordia grew up to be a fine young man. As the days, weeks, months, & years pass, find comfort in your precious memories. Find comfort in each other, & in all of the things Luke loved -- in your own time, in your own way.
Luke is now in the loving arms of our dear Lord in Heaven. God's plan is not for us to understand right now. In the difficult, painful days ahead, try to hold tight to your faith. For reasons unknown, Heaven needed another angel. Now your sweet angel will be with you always. Please know that you are, & will continue to be, in our thoughts and prayers. We are so sorry.
Love,
Mark, Candace, Chelsea, & Liana Wilson
