Melissa Millan Obituary

Melissa J. Millan died Thursday November 20, 2014. During the 54 years of her life, Melissa was an energetic and charismatic person, creating close friendships both personally and professionally. Born in Hartford, Melissa was the daughter of the late Bernelle "Bunny" (Curtis) Millan and Raymond "Tito" Millan of Simsbury, where she's lived for many years. A graduate of Simsbury High School, she received her BA from Middlebury College in 1984 and an Executive MBA from Harvard. Professionally, Melissa held positions in the insurance industry her entire career starting with Sun Life Insurance Company and currently holding the position of Senior Vice President for Mass Mutual. Melissa was interested in and pursued a wide array of activities that engaged her mind, body and spirit. She was a natural leader, starting in high school as the Secretary of her Senior Class, Co-Captain of the cross country team and participating in the Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and a quartet. Her leadership roles continued through college and into her professional career and community involvement. An accomplished athlete, she competed in area triathlons and encouraged others with her determination, perseverance and active mentoring. She also enjoyed skiing, biking, hiking and exploring the great outdoors. As the devoted mother of two beautiful and engaged children, Melissa strongly supported their numerous activities. She was especially involved with their drama groups and sports teams. In addition to her father Tito, Melissa leaves behind her son Zachary "Zeke" Hodkin and her daughter Victoria "Tori" Hodkin; her brothers Mark Millan (Karen) and Matthew Millan (Liz); niece Isabelle and nephews Tyler and Caleb; dear friend Chris Bombara and his family; as well as many cousins. Her family will receive friends Friday, December 5, 2014 from 5-8 pm at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Avenue, Windsor, CT. A Memorial Service in celebration of her life will be held Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 2 PM at Trinity Episcopal Church, 11 Church Street, Tariffville, CT. A reception at the church will immediately follow the service. A private burial will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Melissa Millan Scholarship Fund at her alma mater, Middlebury College. The fund will support women with high financial needs. Gifts may be mailed to Middlebury College Advancement Office, 700 Exchange Street, Middlebury, VT 05753. For directions or online condolences please visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com

Melissa was my immediate boss back at Sun Life and can recall her commitment and determination as she commuted from Hartford each week and never complained. Best of all I remember well her beautiful smile, intelligence and her captivating way she went about getting things done. Obviously, there just aren't enough "good" people like her to go around. She will be missed, but greatly appreciated.

Melissa worked for me at GroupAmerica back in the 90's but I knew right away that she would probably end up being my boss: she was so talented and bright and she seized every opportunity to learn and grow in her career. And did she grow and advance. I was so pleased to see how well she did in the previous male-dominated insurance business and she always did it with style and class. In addition to her business savvy, she was also a good friend and wonderful person to work with. We both moved on to other companies but I kept up with her progress from mutual friends and was not at all surprised to hear she had advanced to a Senior VP position at Mass Mutual! I am so sorry that her children have been deprived of having her wisdom and grace as they grow older-she will truly be missed. The world is a better place because she was here for too short a time. My thoughts and prayers are with her entire family.

To Melissa's family I am deeply saddened for the loss of this wonderful person. I went to Grade School, High School and was a felllow Cross Country runner. Melissa had a very kind heart and always showed compassion toward everyone.

Dear Mr. Millan and family, May your dear Melissa rest-in-peace. I believe you are the Ray Millan that my mother (Jane Rouleau) worked for at CT Mutual in the 70s.
