Robert Greenstein Obituary

Dr. Robert M. Greenstein, 80 years of age, of Avon, CT, passed away on Friday, July 27, 2018. He was the beloved husband of Arlene (Rosenberg) Greenstein. Born in New York, NY, he was the son of the late Nathan and Sara (Gold) Greenstein. Dr. Greenstein had a hand in virtually everything that influenced the current and future health of Genetics in the State of Connecticut and beyond: caring for patients, supervising genetic counselors, training residents and fellows, supporting the cytogenetics and molecular laboratories, managing and leading programs and grants, lobbying the state legislature, working with the newborn screening lab, and serving within local support groups. He dedicated his career to delivering compassionate care to individuals and families affected by genetic conditions, teaching and training the next generation(s) of medical geneticists, and enthusiastically bringing the power of genetic and genomic knowledge to the public. His formal medical training started at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. While completing his internship and residency in Pediatrics at the Bronx Municipal Hospital Center in New York, he honed his cytogenetics skills working part time in Dr. Harold Klinger's laboratory at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His dedication to formal and informal "service" included a position as Captain in the US Air Force as Chief of Pediatrics at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois. Following this, he realigned himself toward his interest in growing field of Medical Genetics, completing a post-doctoral fellowship in Human Genetics and Birth Defects in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University. His 45 year career in Genetics at the University of Connecticut began when Dr. Milton Markowitz, the first Chairman of the fledgling Department of Pediatrics, recruited him to build a Genetics Division. During his career at UConn, his roles included director of the cytogenetics lab and genetic counseling services, pediatrics residency director, associate and acting Chairman, and director of the Medical Genetics Residency program. He was involved in teaching the Human Genetics course for UConn Medical students and made opportunities for learning in his clinics available to any interested student. A fierce advocate for individuals with disabilities, he was involved for many years with the Connecticut Down Syndrome Congress. A Greenstein scholarship was awarded to students pursuing a postgraduate degree in a field that will benefit individuals with Down syndrome. On April 29, 2009, as he transitioned toward retirement, his legacy was honored by M. Jodi Rell, the Governor of the State of Connecticut, who proclaimed that day Dr. Robert Greenstein Day. Despite his unfortunate passing, Dr. Greenstein's passion for genetics and its future remains strong, as does his legacy. Dr. Greenstein was known by family, friends and colleagues for his humor, humility, work ethic, compassion, optimism and empathy. An avid fly fisherman, Dr. Greenstein spent countless hours fishing along the Farmington River, Canada and the Bahamas. Dr. Greenstein was also an accomplished tennis player, regularly winning numerous tennis tournaments at the Farmington Valley Racket Club when he was in his prime. In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by his daughter Suzanne Greenstein of West Hartford, CT; his son, Daniel M Greenstein and his daughter in-law Heather (Smith) Greenstein of West Hartford, CT; his sister, Nancy Batterman of Scarsdale, NY and his two beloved grandchildren, Maxwell and Mazie Greenstein. A Memorial service will take place at 11:00 am on Friday, August 3, 2018 in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, CT with Rabbi Rebekah Mag-Goldman officiating. Dr. Greenstein's family will be receiving guests at 10:30am. A luncheon will take place immediately following the service, with the location to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Down Syndrome Association of Connecticut (www.mydsact.org/donate/). Dr Greenstein was my daughters doctor he “educated” me slowly and compassionately about my daughters illness (Tay-Sachs) he was kind, patient, and because of him I was able to face a long hard road and he was there for us even at two am he would answer the phone and meet us at the hospital, never before nor since were we lucky enough to have a doctor like him! He was a blessing in our life through my daughters illness. He was the best, absolutely. Jennifer’s mom.

To the Greenstein Family - My husband and I came to Dr. Greenstein approximately 11 years with our beautiful boy. With compassion and great care Dr. Greenstein diagnosed our son with Angelman Syndrome, a somewhat rare neurogenetic disorder. I will never forget Dr. Greenstein's gentle manner as he counseled us at this life changing moment. After talking with numerous families around the world about their experiences, we have realized how fortunate we were to have had access to Dr. Greenstein's expertise so close to home. Gabriel is a happy, healthy boy and our family lives a joyful and purposeful life. Please know that Dr. Greenstein played a hand in helping us on our very special journey. With love and gratitude - Barbara, Bob and Gabriel Dell.

My heartfelt sympathy to Mrs. G. and all your loved ones. I just learned of Bob's passing during Grand Rounds commentary Tuesday. I was interviewed by Bob on a beautiful autumn day in 1973 as an applicant to the new Pediatric Internship & Residency Program at Dempsey Hospital and the Univ. Of CT Affiliated Hospitals. Very fortunately for me, I matched and benefited from an incredibly exceptional training program with Dr. G.. The learning experience was outstanding and it was such a privilege to have such a mentor in Bob. Beyond that, Bob remained a friend and always the consumate pediatrician; during 41 years of practice, he was always the first one I called for advice. Again, my heartfelt sympathy on your loss, I regret that I wasn' t at the memorial service

Dr. Greenstein is the most compassionate and caring doctors I have ever met. I met him when my son was only 2 months old in the ICU at CCMC, hanging on by a thread to survive. He was so compassionate and forthcoming on what we were facing. He quietly reassured me that "miracles happen every day" beyond what modern medicine can ever explain. For the next 15 years he had tears in his eyes and a huge smile on his face every time he saw my son. He is now 22 and doing great, thanks in large part by Dr. Bob's guidance, knowledge and perseverance to share his genetics knowledge. May you rest in peace until we meet again.

Our family had an affectionate name for this beloved man - Dr. Greenjeans. He guided us thru Christopher's diagnosis and early years with PKU, and he was patient and definitely a superb 'counselor!' We pray that you will be surrounded by treasured memories and the knowledge that he helped lots of kids and lots of their mothers and fathers, too! May you know peace and have lots of extra hugs, too ~

I have been a genetic counselor for 34 years, and I credit Bob Greenstein for introducing me to this profession, and especially for his letter of recommendation that helped me get into grad school. In my interview for grad school, the program director commented, "Dr. Greenstein tells me you are a really good softball player!" I almost fell over. When I next saw Bob, he reassured me that my application would stand out with a quirky comment like that, and he was right! I will be forever grateful for that.

My first genetic counseling position after grad school was at UConn. I worked for Bob for approximately 10 years, and he was truly a gifted physician. I always remember him telling me, "...genetic counseling is 20% genetics, and 80% counseling." He was ahead of his time in many ways; his appreciation of genetics in medicine, and his appreciation of genetic counselors as part of the health care team.

I know there are many others with similar stories of how Bob influenced and supported their careers, and that is comforting...to know that his vision and calm, steady, genuine care for patients continues in all of us.

I remember the day like it was yesterday when he hired me 25 years ago...here's how it went Bob said "please to meet you" I shook his hands...he said "I heard a lot about you, do you want 2 weeks vacation? I said yes...do you like kids? Yes...I can only pay you $11.00/hr...but a lot of joy and free knowledge and hard work.... I said sounds like a dream job... he said yep and you are hired ... It was the best job I ever had ... I learned so much from him...so many amazing stories and memories... too many to list .... Dr. Robert Greenstein you are now in the heavens and night skies as one of the finest and brightest star up there...guiding and teaching us from beyond for all eternity God bless my friend and teacher of knowledge
