Roger CLARKE Obituary

CLARKE, Roger Scarlett Roger Scarlett Clarke of Collinsville, Connecticut, died peacefully on Saturday (January 8, 2011). Recently diagnosed with kidney cancer, he will be much missed by his family and the large circle of colleagues and friends that he maintained throughout his life. Born in Yorkshire, England in 1936, Roger became a U.S. citizen in 1981. He studied architecture at Liverpool University and in Munich, Germany. In New York City he worked in the offices of Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill and Edward Larrabee Barnes before moving to Collinsville. Early in his architectural practice, he designed innovative passive solar houses. He then specialized in the historic restoration of many of Connecticut's most interesting public and religious buildings. He was a longtime member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Roger loved Collinsville and actively contributed to its conservation; including its listing on the National Register of Historic Places. He was a frequent participant in town meetings and committees including the Collinsville Historic District Commission. A delightful and sensitive companion, Roger was always willing to spend time addressing the interests and concerns of others. He will be remembered by all who had the privilege to know him for his dry sense of humor and his uncommon vision, reflected in his remarkable sketches and architecture. His aesthetic sensitivity included a deep appreciation of classical music and he enjoyed especially attending summer concerts with close friends in Marlboro, VT. He enjoyed walking and birding in Collinsville and near the ocean in South Kingstown, RI. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, his children; Alison Clarke and Justin Clarke, his sister, Heather Wheat, and his grandchildren, Claudia, Scarlett and Ian. A celebration of Roger's life is planned for Spring 2011. Memorial donations may be made to the Maxwell Shepherd Memorial Arts Fund, Inc. c/o the Collinsville Savings Society or the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation via their Web site.

I went to Roundhay School in Leeds, Yorkshire, with Roger and we were in the same class for four years. Of the 150 boys in our year (1947 - 1953) Roger was undoubtedly the most outstanding artist and at the same time was extremely modest and unassuming about his enormous talent. He was very intelligent and even as a teenager he was a perfect gentleman at all times. I am Jewish and at a time when antisemitism was still quite acceptable we were good friends; he was naturally always extremely sensitive and never made me feel uncomfortable or in any way an outsider at any time. I only found out about his recent death by accident and am extremely sorry to hear of it. My deepest sympathies go to all his family.

Dear Marjorie,

I am so very sad to learn of Roger's death. It was always a pleasure to run into you both at musums and concerts. He was an kind and knowledgable listener to tales of our house projects. Every Christmas brought a card with a new drawing of a place you and he had traveled to during the year.

Please know we are thinking of you and grieving with you too.

Roger Clarke gave generously of his talents, time and expertise to help Canton and Collinsville retain its historic charm and character. Always a gentleman, when he spoke, people listened. His influence on Canton's community will be felt for generations. His passing is a loss to everyone who knew him and to our town and state. Our deepest sympathies are with his family and friends.

To the Clarke family, I am so sorry for your loss. God tells us that he will bring an end to all the suffering that we face. I hope that this gives you comfort. He also tells us that we will have a chance to see our loved ones again.

I grew up with Alison, Roger's daughter, and I know that many of her fine traits reflect the kindness, caring and creativity of both of her parents. When I showed interest in architecture in high school, Roger generously allowed me a glimpse into his profession through an internship. Over the years I have always been excited to see Roger's latest drawings. Even though Alison use to complain that he would peer out the side window while driving, I'm glad that he shared his appreciation for his surroundings with all of us through his sketches. My thoughts and love are with you Alison, Marjorie and Justin.
