Sidney Glassman Obituary

August 6, 1928-October 29, 2023. His father called him "a puzzle." What a wonderful metaphor for this man who was as adept at solving puzzles as he was the epitome of a riddle difficult to understand or solve. Whatever he undertook in his 95 years was accomplished with love and the highest level of education: William H. Hall High School, his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Vermont, his D.M.D. from Tufts School of Dental Medicine, 1953-1957, and Graduate Orthodontics, cum laude, Certificate, Resident in Orthodontics, 1957-1959; his association with both Tufts University School of Dental Medicine as Clinical Assistant Instructor, Clinical Instructor, clinical assistant Professor, Visiting Lecturer, and Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine as a teacher in the classrooms of each institution. With great affection given and received he brought home to our dining room table his young students to share their future dreams of specialty practices over one of his extraordinary gourmet dinners.

As President of Tufts Connecticut Society of Orthodontics, Diplomate of the American association of Orthodontics he led a group to London, England.

His teaching experience was varied, diverse and loved; Research assistant in the Tufts Cleft Palate Institute, Clinical Assistant instructor in the Tufts Department of Orthodontics, Clinical assistant Professor at the International College of Dentistry in Singapore, to the French association of orthodontists in Nice. His associations were numerous; the American Dental association, the Connecticut Dental Society, The American Association of Orthodontics, The Northeastern Society of Orthodontists; Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, President of the Connecticut Society of Orthodontists, President of the Tufts Association of Orthodontists.

Sid's special honors were the Robert Andrews Society for Dental Research, the OKU Honorary Dental Fraternity; Diplomate, American Board of Orthodontists; College of Diplomates, American Board of Orthodontists; Fellow, International College of Dentistry; Fellow, Pierre Fauchard Academy, and Diplomate, American Board of Forensic Dentistry. He also contributed much research and publications.

Before his graduate university and academic careers began however, he was called up to serve in the United States Army/Korean war, 1951-1953 in which he met a 14 year old Korean boy looking for his brother who was stationed with the X Corp. Yoon found his brother but also found Sid with whom he formed a lifetime friendship. Yoon Tai Hee knew no English; Sid knew no Korean but ordering books through the U.S.Army Sid taught Yoon English and mathematics which ultimately led to Yoon's acceptance to the University of Connecticut at Storrs, his doctorate in Agricultural Economics and lifetime career in the World Bank, also serving as the World Bank's ambassador to Afghanistan for 3 1/2 years. Yoon attributed his successful life's career to this "adoption" by Sidney B. Glassman, Bronze Star and Honorary Societies' recipient.

Sid Is survived by his wife, Joy Slonim Glassman to whom he was married for 70 years, his son and daughter-in-law, Dr Peter and Julie Levey Glassman, his daughter Sea, his grandchildren Andrew and Clara, step-grandchildren Alexandra and Chloe, his sister-in-law, Dolores Slonim, niece Barbara Mellman Weiss and nephews-in-law Steven Weiss and Robert Almquist, and "adopted" daughter-in-law Geraldine Barrett Yoon.

He was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Fannie Glassman, brother Leon and sister -in-law Nancy Nemser Glassman, sister Sylvia Glassman Mellman, brother-in-law Sidney Mellman, and his "adopted " son Yoon Tai Hee.

Sid will live on in our memory .

I was saddened to learn of Sidney´s death. He was one of my teachers and someone I truly respected. I am who I am partly because of him. My most vivd memory of Sid was when, as a first year resident at Tufts, he taught us one of the more complex cephalometric analyses. Our class spent two hours with him that day, left the room and commented t each other: "What the hell was he talking about?" Little did we realize then, the complexity of the topic and how well he knew the subject. Many years later I realized how important a seminar that was to assure my future success. During recent years, when he was ill, I ask him if I could visit with him. He seemed disinclined to have me do that, so I did not drive down to Connecticut. I´m sorry for that.
I can say that I really loved "Sidley" as we affectionately referred to him.
Please accept my deepest condolences.
Barry

Dr. Glassman was my neighbor since I was five years old on Ferncliff Drive. His children were one of my first friends and he and his wife Joy were second parents to me. He will be greatly missed!

This was a man for all ages. He was adept in so many roles and played them all with distinction. An outstanding orthodontist as recognized by his peers, he was a perpetual student and an outstanding teacher. May there be many who can emulate him as a result

Sid had many accomplishments and one was that he was the most charming and funny person to sit next to at the dinner table. Sid and Joy were the best part of my holidays.

Dr. Glassman was my orthodontist back in the 60´s. My mother would drive my brother and I "over the mountain" to West Hartford once a month for our check-ups, in what seemed like a day trip to a different and busy world. Dr. Glassman was great, made our visits fun, and we always looked forward to the next time. I have some happy memories of those times...may he rest in peace.

Dr. Glassman was my Orthodontist back in the late 1960s, when he shared a practice with Dr. Kalafa on Albany Avenue in West Hartford. As a very buck-toothed child during childhood, I recalled being fit with braces, and the regular trips to his office to have the wire pulled back tighter as my teeth slowly realigned to normal. Throughout the year, I recall his gentle manner, his caring disposition, and his professional attitude that made these trips less traumatic than they might have been.
I will always be thankful to Dr. Glassman for my "winning smile," and I hope the emptiness his family and friends feel be soon filled with warm, loving memories.

Sid handled the orthodontic care for me, my wife, my children...he only missed my grandchildren. Despite the circumstances it was fun to go to his office next to the fire station and have braces adjusted by Sid or Joel Kalafa . Years later he acted as an expert witness for my client and did a wonderful job. A great guy! He will be missed. Gerry Sack

My husband was also a dentist and when we to West Hartford we immediately became friends with Joy and Sid. Over the years we had many delicious dinners, always followed by a visit to our favorite ice cream parlor. I will always remember those fun times. Judy Kotick
