Stephen Coffey Obituary



Stephen J. Coffey, 72, of Enfield, passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side on Tuesday, November 28, 2017. Born November 14, 1945, in Hartford, Connecticut, Steve was raised in Windsor where he lived until graduating from Windsor High School in 1964. Upon graduating he joined the United States Army serving as an electrical instrument serviceman from 1965 to 1968. He was honorably discharged and decorated with several medals (including expert rifleman) while serving in the Vietnam War. Upon returning he made his home in Enfield, where he resided until his death. He was employed as an electrician by I.B.E.W. Local Union #35 from March 1970, until his retirement in September 2000. He was an avid U.S. Civil War buff and historian. This hobby led him to join the North South Skirmish Association (NSSA) which promotes competitive shooting of Civil War period weapons. He enjoyed many weekends camping and competing with the 20th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. Sargent Major made many lifelong friends and treasured those friendships even after he retired due to health issues. He enjoyed watching his kids' sporting events throughout their childhood and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and New York Giants. He is survived by his son Paul Coffey and his wife Anna of Enfield, CT, daughter Jo Ann Lutters and her husband John of West Haven, CT; six grandchildren Joseph Lutters, John Lutters, Jordan Lutters, Jake Lutters, Kendall Coffey and Reese Coffey; two great grandchildren Ezekiel and Eliana. He is also survived by his four brothers: Thomas and Shirley Coffey of Wethersfield, Peter and Gloria Coffey of Windsor Locks, James and Elizabeth Coffey of Eaton, NY, and Joseph and Elvira Coffey of Coventry. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Rose Coffey. Visitation hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, Enfield. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2017, at Leete-Stevens. Burial procession concludes with graveside service and military honors at Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, donations in Stephen's memory may be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) https://www.dav.org/. My Sincere condolences to Steve's family. I will always remember the wonderful times we had skirmishing. He always kept a fatherly eye on me. I was so lucky to know him.
