Susan Ludlow Obituary

Susan (Kohlstrom) Ludlow, 77, of Newington, passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. She was the beloved wife of C. Stephen Ludlow for 52 years. Born in Hartford, daughter of the late Carl and Dorothy (Sanstrom) Kohlstrom, she was a longtime Newington resident. Susan graduated from Central CT State University with a Bachelor's degree where she was also involved in their choral group and went on to earn a Master's degree from Wesleyan University. Susan had a passion for teaching and leading youth. She was a respected educator in West Hartford. She taught American Studies at the middle school and went on to teach the same, Anthropology, and Sociology at Hall High School, eventually earning the Teacher of the Year accolade. Susan also spent time as the Career Education Director for various West Hartford schools, taught English as a second language, ran the Archeology Club trips for her students and coached competitive mock trial teams. One of her true passions was cooking where she especially excelled in creating marvelous desserts. Through the years, she enjoyed traveling with her family and later would spend winters with her husband in St. Augustine, FL. She and Steve especially loved cruises, and among her favorites were cruises to Alaska, through the islands of Hawaii and French Polynesia, around Cape Horn, through the Mediterranean Sea and a Northern European cruise to Sweden, the home of her ancestry. She will be remembered as selfless with a giving heart. Along with her husband, she leaves her son Stephen Todd Ludlow and his wife Alison of South Windsor, and her two adored granddaughters, Tessa Jane and Abigail Sue Ludlow. She is survived by cousins Kenneth Sanstrom in Delaware and Nia in California, and she was predeceased by her special cousin Lynn in Massachusetts. She also leaves many close friends, including, Linda and Dave Pouliot of Palm Coast, FL, Nancy and Bob Guyon of Newington, Dotti and Ed Lynch of Port St. Lucie, FL. and Christine and Lou Pandolfe of West Hartford, CT. She had also enjoyed a wonderful relationship with Tod's in-laws, Patty and Jack Gerhard of Manchester, CT. It was 1976 and I was a 9th grader at Talcott. Mrs. Ludlow was my Social Studies teacher. I vividly remember the mock trial we did in her class. During a discussion with her she made an offhand remark that has stayed with from that point on, "you should be a lawyer." Well, I did not become a lawyer but did spend 36 years in law enforcement. There were many cases that I worked on throughout my career where I would fondly recall her words, and they drove me to always do my best. She was an inspiration and a model of what teaching should be. I am so very sorry for the family´s loss and am grateful that you shared her with so many of us through the years.

Sue was a great teacher and family friend. She had wonderful presence both in and out of class. I will remember her as joyful, inquisitive, animated, and encouraging. She loved her work and it was apparent to her students. Her light will be missed.

Mrs. Ludlow taught me at Talcott Jr. High. She sparkled and glowed when she taught. She was pure love as a teacher and genuinely cared about each and every student. I can see her clear as day in my minds eye and hear her sweet concern as she spoke to me before and after classes. She was full of energy always just all over all at once guiding each of us in our studies xo so sorry for your great great loss xo

My heartfelt condolences to the Ludlow family. Mrs. Ludlow was my American Studies teacher at Hall in 1990. She always had a way of making her students feel empowered and special. She brought history to life, and I credit her with igniting a passion for the subject in me, as well as being a teacher I wish(ed) to emulate in my own classroom.
May you find peace in knowing she will forever be remembered with love.

I´m so very sorry for your loss. Mrs. Ludlow was one of my favorite teachers at Hall High School, and I was so lucky to have her for Sociology. She was compassionate, smart and loved teaching. She brightened up the room. And she always taught us and treated us like adults, like our opinions and ideas mattered. She will be missed.
