Walter MacFarlane Obituary

Walter J. MacFarlane died Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at his home in Kensington. He was born in New Rochelle, NY on May 2, 1927 to Hector and Alice (Nyberg) MacFarlane. At an early age his family moved to Johnston, RI, and he graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in Providence. Upon graduation, Walter enlisted in the Army and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 33rd Infantry, and served in the Panama Canal Zone. Upon his honorable discharge, he lived in Reading, MA, and married Lois Blake on September 16, 1950. Walter enrolled in Northeastern University, graduating with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in June 1952. He accepted a position with Stanley Works and moved his family to New Britain, and then to Kensington in July 1961. Walter worked for Stanley for 36 years, retiring in 1988 as Vice President of Product Engineering and Research, having been responsible for over a dozen US patents. Walter was a life-long Red Sox fan, and enjoyed many years of golf as a member of Shuttle Meadow with his wife. He also went on many golf trips with his good friends to Cape Cod, Myrtle Beach, and Bermuda. He leaves his wife, Lois, to whom he was married for 67 years, and his 5 children, Ann MacFarlane, Janet (Richard) Bogle, Nancy MacFarlane, John (Jane) MacFarlane, and Jean (William) Pieper. Walter also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, Bryan (Kristen), Philip (Krystal), Carissa (Kris), Katelyn (Scotty), Rebecca (Carmen), Ian, Jeff, Jared, George (Caley), John, and Leah, whom he cherished, and who loved him dearly as their grandfather. There will be no calling hours. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, since Walter was an avid reader, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to Berlin-Peck Memorial Library, 234 Kensington Road, Berlin, CT 06037. The Carlson Funeral Home, New Britain is assisting the family with arrangements. Please share a memory or note of sympathy at www.carlsonfuneralhome.com

Dad MacFarlane, I never met you, yet I feel like I knew youthe family man! Nancy often spoke of you and Mom MacFarlane and her siblings with great love, respect, and pride. And for as long as I have known Nan, your family has made a point of huddling together and rallying around you every Friday to toast another day of the MacFarlane way and the family man who was the core of such devotion. Cheers, Dad MacFarlane! I will make a point of meeting you one day.
