Walter Umberfield Obituary

Walter S. Umberfield, 96, of South Windsor, beloved husband of 67 years of the late Helen (Dziadul) Umberfield, passed away peacefully, on Sunday, June 25, 2023. Walter was born on July 23, 1926, in Hartford, one of three children of the late Walter B. and Katherine (Schoen) Umberfield. He was raised in Hartford and was a graduate of Weaver High School.

Upon his graduation, Walter was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944. He proudly served his country for three years during World War II. in the 29th Infantry Regiment, having fought in France and Germany.

He graduated from Springfield College, having earned a degree in recreation and camping. Walter played on the National Collegiate Volleyball Championship Team. He began his career and became a certified YMCA Health and Physical Education Director, working in Waterbury & Stamford. In 1956, Walter changed his profession and became a computer systems designer at Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company. A position he enjoyed for over 30 years, before retiring having earned the title of Data Processing Officer.

Walter was very active in the South Windsor community. He was a former PTA President, Little League Player Director and Coach, Recreation Commission Chairman, a member of the Republican Town Committee, Safe-Rides co-advisor and was a co-chairman of the Veterans Memorial Monument Committee.

Walter had been a performing member of the Society of American Magicians, since 1956. A member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, since 1970. He served 20 years as Treasurer, for both local branches.

Walter is survived by his two sons, Wayne Umberfield and Robert Umberfield, his cherished grandson, Alex Umberfield all of Edgecomb, Maine and several nieces, nephews, and their families. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Richard Umberfield and his sister, June McNally

At Walter's request, there will be no funeral services or calling hours. Private burial will be in the New Lebanon Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
