William Washington Obituary

William H. Washington, 92, of Hartford, beloved husband and best friend for over 55 years of the late Jo-Ann (Oates) Washington, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on August 10, 2022. William was born in Trinidad, son of the late Wilhelmina Washington, and migrated with his mother and grandmother to New York when he was a young man. He received his bachelor's degree in Culinary Arts and was employed with the State of Connecticut, Department of Corrections, as a Dietary Consultant, managing the kitchens in all the correctional facilities in the State of Connecticut, and retired after over 40 years of service. William and Jo-Ann were dedicated to the Lord and faithful members of Hopewell Baptist Church in Windsor. William, better known as "Mr. Wash," was a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and dear friend. He will fondly be remembered as a selfless, kind, loving, giving, and true gentle man who loved his family more than anything. Mr. Wash always treated people with care and respect, regardless of their background, and taught his children and grandchildren to do the same. He was the type of man who would listen carefully to what you had to say, and many people would seek his advice. Mr. Wash was an amazing spirit, with a wonderful wit and sense of humor, and he leaves a legacy of beautiful memories that will live in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him. Mr. Wash loved to fish, especially in Niantic, and took the kids with him every chance he got. He was a wonderful chef and loved to cook even in his free time. He and Jo-Ann always made cooking a group effort, perfecting many dishes together, and they also loved to travel, dance, and listen to Jazz and Gospel music. Above all else, he enjoyed a good cup of coffee in the morning to start his day. William is survived by his children, JoAnn Washington Brooks and her husband George of Andover, Lorraine Wilkins of Hartford, William Washington, Jr. and his wife Margaret of Hartford, Cathy Washington, Rene Washington and his significant other Valerie Devorse of Hartford, Darryl Schaeffer of Brooklyn, NY, Mark Washington and his wife Janet of Hartford, Maurice Washington and Marcel Washington, both of Willington, who were his loving caretakers as well and helped him pass with grace and dignity, and Michael Washington of Hartford; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, other relatives, and friends. In addition to the love of his life, Jo-Ann, he was predeceased by his son, Robert Washington. His family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 31, 10-11 a.m., with a Celebration of Life, 11 a.m., at Hopewell Baptist Church, 280 Windsor Ave., Windsor. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. To leave a condolence for his family, please visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com
