Patrick Hooks Obituary

Patrick F. Hooks, 80, a Montana native and attorney for over 50 years, passed away on Dec. 23, 2006, from complications related to cancer.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Dec. 30, at 11 a.m., at Holy Cross Parish in Townsend. The Rev. Gary Reller, a longtime family friend, will officiate. A rosary service will be held at Holy Cross on Friday, Dec. 29, at 7 p.m.

Pat was born in Bozeman on April 30, 1926, to Frank and Myrtle Hooks. He attended schools in Townsend, and entered active duty in the Naval Reserve Officers' Training Corps at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho, March 1944. He graduated from the University of Colorado with a commission as an ensign in the U.S. Navy, and served in the Pacific Theater. In 1946, his ship was involved in Operation Crossroads, and Pat witnessed the detonation of two atomic bombs off the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

After completing his naval service, Pat returned to the University of Colorado, and earned bachelor of arts degrees in economics and political science in 1948. He then entered law school at Georgetown Law Center, Washington, D.C., and graduated with an LL.B. degree in 1951.

Pat returned to Montana, and practiced law in Helena with the firm of Loble and Picotte. Pat and his family later moved to Townsend, and Pat practiced law as a solo practitioner, and also with partners Jeff Sherlock and Tom Budewitz. He served two terms in the House of Representatives, representing Broadwater County in 1953-1957, and served as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee in 1955. He was a 50-year-plus member of the Montana Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the American Trial Lawyers Association, and the Montana Trial Lawyers Association. He was also a 60-year member of the American Legion.

Pat married Mary Kieckbusch of Townsend on June 25, 1955, and they enjoyed 51 years of marriage.

Pat is survived by Mary, their daughter, Susan, of Pocatello; son, Bill and daughter-in-law, Mary of Helena; their three sons, Brendan, John and Patrick; son, Michael and his wife, Maggie Lucas, of Seattle; and their two children, Kathleen and Brian; sister-in-law, Pat Reller and her husband, Dale; sister-in-law, Marnee Kieckbusch and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Conor Patrick Hooks.

Memorials are suggested to the Broadwater County Head Start Program, 503 N. Pine St., Townsend, Montana 59644, or the charity of the donor's choice.

Connors Mortuary in Townsend is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

I am the better for knowing Pat Hooks. He took time to listen & talk with me when I encountered him at social gatherings. His grace and easy manner put folks at ease are to be emulated He always wanted to hear what I thought about different political situations in the part of the country I was in at the time most recently about Courtney/Simmons as well as Lieberman. Whenever I watch an close contest I think of Pat and know he is also aware of it.
A Gentleman Pat was. I am sorry for the loss but improved by the fellowship.

Mary, Bill and Family,
I was so sorry to hear of Pat's passing. I had the pleasure of being associated with Pat in the practice of law for a few short years. He always had time to share his wisdom and experience, along with his amazing stories. A great lawyer and man. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I want to echo Tom Dooling's comments about Pat. Long ago I tried a case in Townsend, not against Pat, gave what I thought was a good closing argumemt, and won the case. Afterword one of the jurors came up to me and said "you're a pretty good talker but our Pat Hooks is the best." His type of lawyer is, unfortunately, a vanishing breed. We will all miss him.

Mary and Family:

We are sorry to hear of your loss. He was a great friend of the Arnett Family, as was his Father. We will miss stopping in to say hello when we visit in Townsend.

Now the attorney (Pat Hooks) and his long time secretary (Vera Arnett) are together in Heaven looking down upon us all and always encouraging us to do "the right and honorable thing."

All our Love,
Duane and Judy Standley Arnett

I was sorry to hear of Pat's death. I remember him as one of the last of the great old-time lawyers: a scholar and a gentleman first and always, but within those parameters, a zealous advocate and loyal counselor. We'll all miss him.

Mary,

Wendy and I extend our deepest heartfelt condolences to you and your family during this difficult time.

One of my fondest memories of Pat was a day spent playing golf with him and my father-in-law (also an attorney) at Old Baldy golf course in Townsend. I think we enjoyed ourselves so much that we played 36 holes that day!

Please know that you are in our prayers and that he was a truly special person.

Please
know that Pat was loved by many. His quiet work behind the scenes
affected many lives in a positive way. He always treated me as a peer
and asked my opinion when I was barely dry behind the ears- that meant
a lot to a young, female attorney. He never sought the limelight but
worked hard at doing the right thing. One can only guess how many hours
and many cases he handled for little or no fee simply because he knew
it needed to be done. Bill carries on in the same wonderful tradition.
My thoughts will be with you during this difficult time.

Mary and family - Where does one start? Pat was a good friend and mentor from the day I met him in real life - no mistaking that gravely voice from over the phone when he was having lunch one day in Dori's cafe! I have so many wonderful memories - of laughing with and at him; who else would use an excuse like "I sunburned the bottoms of my feet while vacationing in Italy"?? He was so encouraging in my quest to always better myself as a legal secretary. He had a big heart and always a kind word - the most precious being when he sent me a letter just two years ago at this time on the loss of my son. God has only taken his body; his spirit will be with all forever!
