ROLLIE ERWIN Obituary

ROLLIE HERBERT ERWIN, 68, of Barboursville, without notice, went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at his home in Barboursville. Rollie was born in Hamlin, W.Va., to Rollie Herbert Erwin Sr. and Georgia Allen (Wooten) on November 26, 1949. He attended Barboursville High School (Class of 1967) then was drafted and served in the Army, based in Korea, before attending Marshall University. He then began a career that included many years at United Parcel Service before opening a business. He was best known as owner/operator of S&J Market on Martha Road in Barboursville. Rollie was, quite simply, loved by all and was often referred to as "The Mayor of Martha." His purchase and successful operation of S&J Market brought much needed service to local residents as well as a "home base" for the community. His friendly welcome and quick wit welcomed customers for 27 years at the store. Rollie was a very avid golfer. His lifelong passion for golf began as a young man working as a caddy at Guyan Golf & Country Club and never wavered. He had many memorable golf trips with family and friends and was a member of Guyan Golf & Country Club for nearly 18 years. Rollie is preceded in death by his wife of 21 years, Veronica (Ronnie) Walsh Erwin, his parents, Rollie and Georgia Erwin, and siblings, Eugene, Donald and Robert Erwin and Charlene Clagg (Burman). Rollie is survived by his beloved wife, Hope Stevens, son, Sean P. Erwin of Pittsburgh, Pa., daughter, Jennifer and husband Ryan Hazen of Anchorage, Alaska, stepson, Ara Stevens, as well as his beloved grandchildren, Kara, Elijah, Jackson, Barrett, Ellison and Emory. Surviving siblings include Juanita Stanley, Martha Blake and Sarah (Darrell) Meadows. Rollie has left his indelible mark on the world in many ways. First are the many family members he loved and cared for so well, next the countless friends and neighbors, co-workers and golf buddies that enjoyed his refreshing authenticity. A light has gone from the Barboursville community, but we remain thankful for having the privilege of knowing The Mayor, Rollie Erwin. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Chuck Zerkle and Karen Riggio for their support. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association. Friends and family are invited to the Visitation to be held at Wallace Funeral Home in Barboursville, W.Va., on Wednesday, April 25, from 5 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville. Burial will be in White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Barboursville, W.Va.

My grandfather was an amazing man and I wish he was still here today. It feels unreal that it´s been 5, almost 6 years since his passing. I´m now 18 and he was like a father to me. I miss him everyday.

I am saddened to learn of Rollie's passing. He was such a wonderful person. I met Rollie when my territory changed and I picked up his account. He was always so kind and genuine. I will miss our conversations about golf and life in general. God Speed Rollie

To Hope and family,

We were shocked and saddened to hear of Rollie's death. It was similar to the phone call I received from him when he told me he had cancer. Thanks be to God that he let him have several more years of what was a full life. Rollie was always the same, thoughtful, considerate and kind but always quick to give you the needle at the appropriate time! We always enjoyed him as a guest in our home and will miss him greatly. May our great God grant you all the peace and comfort in knowing that Rollie is safe in the arms of our Savior!

I will forever miss Rollie. Just about a month ago was the last time I got to talk to him. Every time the power would go off I would head over to S & J (as I would Alway's say Rollie's) to get some diesel fuel for my generator. The power went off early one morning and I headed to Rollie's. Alway's hoping he would be there so we could talk. He was there and we talked for about an hour.We had so much in common that we could have talked all day.
