David Catlin Obituary

DECATUR - David S. Catlin, 85, of Decatur, IL, passed away at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, February 13, 2011 at Imboden Creek Living Center, Decatur. A private Memorial service will be held. Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur, is assisting the family with the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Catlin family. David was born on June 27, 1925, in Decatur, IL, the son of Arthur and Nona (Biggers) Catlin. He married Juanita Owens on June11, 1944, in Decatur. David was a teacher for Maroa Public Schools for nine years, and retired from Galesburg Public Schools in 1984. He also was a basketball coach. David was a former president of the Cosmopolitan Service Club and the Galesburg Federation of Teachers. He enjoyed photography, lapidary (gem polishing), golfing, and motorcycles. He was also active with youth and Boy Scout camps.  Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Juanita of Decatur; daughter Linda Coplan of AZ; sons James E. Catlin (Jeannie) of Denver, CO, and Cary L. Catlin of Decatur. Also surviving are his grandchildren Michael Burks, David Burks, Sarah Catlin-Vahling, Joseph Catlin, Aaron Lopez, Joshua Catlin, Jennifer Catlin; and 12 great-grandchildren. David was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Rev. Dale Catlin and Dr. Glen Catlin. Condolences may be left to the family at www.brintlingerandearl.com. Obituary written by family members. I had Coach Catlin as my teacher in 1956 when I was in 8th grade at Maroa Grade School. He was a wonderful teacher and coach. I recently wrote my "Memories" for my children and he was included with a picture of him at our Class Trip to New Salem. My deepest Sympathy goes out to you all. Diana (Thrall) Koshinski

I had coach Catlin as the "B" squad foot ball coach my Freshman year at Maroa High school. He was a good coach and well liked Coach and teacher. He was very easy to learn from. It is A great loss to many of us. Dave Smith
