SULLIVAN - Steven K. Wood, 83, of Sullivan, passed away September 22, 2023.
Visitation will be held Saturday October 7, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Reed Funeral Home, Sullivan, IL. Military Honors will be conducted by the Sullivan American Legion Post #68 at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Reed Funeral Home.
Steve was born May 15, 1940 in Decatur, the son of Ivan D. "Cotton" and Geraldine E. (Barger) Wood. After he graduated from Sullivan High School in 1958, he attended the University of Idaho, where he was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity, and the Reserve Officers Training Corps. He graduated in 1962 with a degree in political science.
Steve met his wife, Kathy, while attending college. They married on June 16, 1962, and shipped off to Bamberg, Germany, where they lived for 2 years while Steve served in the US Army F Troop 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment.
After his military service, Steve attended the University of Illinois College of Law, graduating in 1971. Following graduation, he and Kathy moved back to Sullivan, where Steve practiced law for the remainder of his life. During his 50+ year career, Steve was the attorney for the City of Sullivan and other area municipalities, townships, fire districts, as well as representing clients from all around the United States.
Steve was a member of the Sullivan AMBUCS, and served as their Scholarship Committee Chairman. He was a member of the Moultrie County Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, a 50 year member of the Sullivan Lions Club, a member of the George A. Sentel Masonic Lodge #764, and of the Sullivan American Legion Post #68. He was a member throughout his life of the Sullivan First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Prairieland Frontiersmen for over 40 years, and served for many years as a board member, and secretary.
Steve is survived by his children, Michael Wood of Camdenton, MO, Leslie Wood (John Dowdy) of Glen Carbon, IL and his grandchildren, Erin and Caspar Dowdy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Kathy, and his brother Stanley Wood.
