Arthur Sheppard Obituary
SHEPPARD ARTHUR N. The board of trustees, administration, physicians, employees and volunteers of Mount Sinai Medical Center & Miami Heart Institute pay tribute to Arthur N. Sheppard, an outstanding attorney, loving husband, father and grandfather, and a devoted member of our family. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Mr. Sheppard lived in Miami for more than 50 years and was the proud owner of a very successful law firm. He and his wife, Shelly, have five children and two granddaughters. For years, Mr. Sheppard was a very active lay leader and philanthropic sup- porter of Mount Sinai & Miami Heart. He was appointed to the Mount Sinai Hospital Sustaining Board of Fellows in 1973 and was the board's sixth president in 1975. He joined the hospital's board of trustees in 1979. Throughout his tenure, he was a tireless trustee who embraced many roles and responsibilities and used his legal background to benefit the medical center. Mr. Sheppard served as vice president, secretary, assistant secretary and assistant treasurer of the board. He also was a member of numerous board committees, including audit, budget, contractual relations, finance, bylaws, quality assurance, nominating, medical education, and trustee service. He was named a Life Trustee in 1989. Mr. Sheppard also was a founding member of the Young Presidents Club (YPC), which was established in 1974, and was the organization's treasurer emeritus at the time he passed away. His wife, Shelly, and his son Eric also are members of the YPC. Mr. Sheppard became a Founder of Mount Sinai in 1976 and joined the Mount Sinai Foundation Board in 1983. He was later named an emeritus board member. In addition to being a longstanding member of the Mount Sinai & Miami Heart family, Mr. Sheppard was extremely active in the community. He served as a municipal judge in the city of North Bay Village, and is a past chairman of the Lawyers' Title Guaranty Fund. He also was on the Lawyers' Title Services, Inc., advisory board. Mr. Sheppard also was a well-known lecturer on real property, condominium and mortgage law for the American Bar Association Practicing Law Institute, Florida Bar Continuing Legal Education, and the Florida Savings and Loan League. In addition, the Miami Beach Bar Association honored Mr. Sheppard with a Lifetime Service Award, which was presented in May 2001 by Janet Reno. As part of that tribute, the bar association also named its scholarship fund in his honor. All of us at Mount Sinai & Miami Heart extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Sheppard's family. He leaves a legacy of helping others through his leadership and generosity and will always have a special place in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be sorely missed.
