Charlotte Smiley Obituary

Charlotte Stoker Smiley passed away peacefully at her home in Tallahassee, Florida, on December 7, 2025, at the age of 87, surrounded by her family.

Born on May 25, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan, Charlotte was the daughter of Charles and Doris Stoker. Her family later moved to Miami when her father established a residential construction company. Charlotte graduated from Coral Gables Senior High and earned the Gold Star Girl Scout Award. She attended Florida State University, where she was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority, and later earned a Master's degree in Psychology with honors from the University of Miami.

Charlotte met Karl Smiley in 1959 at First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables. They married in 1960 and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where Karl attended medical school. During their marriage of over 63 years, they lived in several cities including Houston, Dallas, and Seattle before returning to Miami. Charlotte worked for the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta and later for NASA in Houston.

Together they raised four children. Charlotte was active in scouting as a den and troop leader and volunteered extensively in her children's schools. After her children entered college, she used her degree to counsel at-risk youth in the Dade County School System and provided pre-marital counseling through her church.

Charlotte cherished time with her family, especially summers with her grandchildren during "Camp Gramsy." She enjoyed boating, water skiing, botany, traveling, and volunteering. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables, P.E.O. International, Coral Gables Garden Club, Montgomery Botanical Center, Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, and Riviera Country Club.

She is survived by her children Tom (Betsy), Scott (MaryAnne), Mark (Elizabeth), and Laura (Jerry) Bryant; and grandchildren Kyle Smiley, Brandon (Julia) Smiley, and Jake, Anna, and Isabel Bryant. She was predeceased by her husband Karl and grandson Christian Jackson Smiley.

A service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables on January 25, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charlotte's name to Camp Mahachee at at https://www.girlscoutsfl.org/en/discover/our-council/visit/camp-mahachee.html.

Charlotte and I were classmates at Gables Hi and maintained a relationship through the years. Our husbands were in surgical training in Houston in late sixties. She often sent emails giving news of fellow Gables classmates. I will miss our many chats. She was a lovely person.
