EDWARD PORTER Obituary

PORTER, EDWARD, Known for his great wit and charisma, Sir Edward Porter is the Founder and President of the International Fine Arts College, now known as Miami International University of Art and Design. He also is the Founder and President of Massey College in Georgia, and Porter College in Indiana. "Enthusiasm Sells!" This is the mantra Sir Edward Porter always used to inspire students to realize their greatest dreams. And tens of thousands of them did, during his storied 54 years in the business of education. His generosity was seemingly limitless, bestowing thousands of students with academic scholarships, their lives lifted and transformed by his legacy and guidance. Beloved by all who knew him, the International Fine Arts College in Miami quickly became the catalyst for South Florida's burgeoning fashion, film, interior design, and digital industries. Some of the biggest names in fashion and design are proud alumni and remained close with Sir Edward upon his retirement. Recognized for his philanthropy and contributions to higher learning, Sir Edward was knighted twice by the Offices of the Pope. But what made Sir Edward Porter most special, and complete, was his loving marriage to the vivacious and glamorous Anna Lee Porter, who passed in 2007. After 53 years together, no woman was ever more adored by her husband. The Porters made a splash wherever they went, and lit up the world with levity, grace, and encouragement. Sir Edward is kept alive by his 3 children: Starr Porter (Chris Wagner), Daniel Porter (Sylvia), and Shannon Leeman (Andrew (d.)), and five loving grandchildren: Drew Leeman, Savannah-Grace Leeman, Mikhael Porter, Anna Lee Porter, and Nicole Saenz. A Celebratory Mass is being held Friday, March 24, 4pm at St. Patrick's Church, 3716 Garden Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sir Edward's honor to CasaValentina.org and SavingInnocence.org, both organizations benefiting young people, always the focus of his life's work.

I graduated from International Fine Arts in 1974. I relish my days in college and have remained a close friend with one of the girls. I don't know of any other college where the founders opened their doors and held parties and invited their students. Sir Edward and Lady Porter welcomed each and every one of us like family. I learned the value of style, integrity and so much more. I am proud to have been a graduate of such a fine college. God Bless all of you. My sincere condolences.
