Gregory Fleeman Obituary

Gregory Fleeman
December 26, 1949 - January 16, 2022
Austin, Texas - Gregory Garner Fleeman, born and raised in Miami Beach, Florida but most recently a resident of Austin, Texas, passed away January 16, 2022, at home in Austin. The son of the esteemed home builder, David Fleeman of Fleeman Builders in South Florida, Gregory was born in Miami Beach, Florida on December 26, 1949. He is survived by his brother, Jeffrey, and countless cousins and friends. Although he had no children of his own, Gregory was legal guardian to Connor and Alessandra, son and daughter of Virginia Giritlian, fellow Miamian who remained friends with Gregory since they were in high school together.
Gregory attended the Cambridge School of Weston, Massachusetts graduating in 1968. He then attended George Washington University and Sarah Lawrence College where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1973. He continued his education at Barry University where he obtained a Master of Science Exceptional Student Education degree with a focus on emotionally disturbed children. Gregory had a gift for working with troubled children. He had the patience to teach the unteachable, soothe the agitated, and help those with learning disabilities. He understood the misunderstood.
Gregory was a voracious reader and an avid collector of books and music. He had a magical collection of musical instruments, priceless treasures, and some of the weirdest things known to man. He was an entertainer who produced his music. His CD "The Right Tool for the Job" featuring Gregory Fleeman and the Fleewomen is available on Amazon and Apple Music.
Gregory had a prolific imagination. At one point in his career, he was a screenwriter who co-wrote the highly acclaimed thriller "FX" starring Bryan Brown. He acted in numerous feature film projects and held a SAG membership.
Some might say Gregory was the funniest man alive. Others might say he was the most generous. Still, others might say he was the most beloved. It was hard to pin him down. He was brilliant and funny. Loving and eccentric. He was the life of the party. Heck, he WAS the party.

I have just been recounting with a colleague at WPIX TV in New York ,which was an interim visit in Gregory´s extraordinarily wide ranging career that he could ` crash land´ a breaking story edit with magical speed..
Meaning .. you´ve got 20 minutes to air and there´s no way you´ll get the video done for the lead story .. and he did. Always.
Editing news was not his thing but he was fast, gifted and a thoughtful guy you could count on. And he looked like a more handsome version of Lou Reed.
Wish I´d stayed in touch more.

Never met him but I have his album with the Fleewomen. Hysterically funny.

This is quite random - but I met Gregory in 1990 when I painted his loft in midtown Manhattan. I'm a musician and we exchanged tapes, and I still remember "It's Not Her Fault She's French." He was also the only client I ever had during my painting career who tipped me a big bag of fireworks. Also, he was home while I was working and I remember him being glued to an early computer monitor all day from morning until I left. I thought "Wow, he must be very busy working!" Then I passed him and saw he was playing games the whole time - like the entire week I was there!

Also, each and every time he answered the phone, he would do it in a funny voice, then would hold the receiver to his chest and shout "GREGGG!!" and answer the phone again in his natural voice. Every. Single. Time.

A very funny and creative man who probably didn't remember me whatsoever, but I sure remembered him! I just happened to Google his name today and was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. RIP and condolences to his family and friends - the man was one-of-a-kind. JOSH MAX NYC
