Victor Witten Obituary

WITTEN, DR. VICTOR H., esteemed dermatologist, and pioneer in the field, passed away at home on January 22, 2007. He was 90. A native Floridian, born in Jacksonville, Witten was proud of being an Eagle Scout. He earned a BS and then his MD from Tulane University in 1941. After four years of active duty in the U.S. Navy as a medical officer, Dr. Witten attained the rank of Lt. Commander. He practiced dermatology in New York City, until 1962, with Dr. Marion B. Sulzberger, Professor and Chairman of Dermatology at the New York School of Medicine. Drs. Sulzberger and Witten were the firs t to use hydrocortisone in dermatology. Dr. Witten moved to Miami as the Professor of Dermatology at the University of Miami School of Medicine and served there until 1968. Witten returned to private practice until 1996 when he then retired at the age of 79. Committed to dermatology, Dr. Witten served as the trustee of the Dermatology Foundation of South Florida, formerly the Dermatology Foundation of Miami, from 1962 until his death. Dr. Witten was greatly disappointed in the apparent trend of modern medicine, in that he believed not enough attention was paid either to patients or to their problems, and that medicine was moving into the realm of "big business", to its detriment. He remained steadfast in his beliefs, however, and was devoted to dermatology and maintained the highest level of professional responsibility toward his patients. This, in fact, commanded their confidence, their respect, and their love. Dr. Witten was a renaissance man. He was trained in the culinary arts at Le Cordon Bleu, Paris and spent many hours devoted to ham radio, to orchids and to the collection of fine wine. He believed fervently in the words of one preservationist, "If we don't pay attention to the road marks of the past, the future begins to loose its point of reference." This belief led to a multi- year effort to interview and record the oral reminiscences of most of the worlds leading dermatologists. The Oral History Division of the National Library of Medicine has accepted this one of a kind audio history of dermatology into the library in perpetuity. Dr. Witten attributed his initiatives to the encouragement of his wife of 33 years, Terri Witten. Witten is survived by his wife, stepchildren, and grandchildren: Rick and Logan Paradies, Jed, Guiomar, Julia and Jacob Paradies, Lisa, David, Gregory and Ross Nigro, Jonathan, Ramsey and Finn Blum. Dr. Witten is also survived by his sister Thelma "Sam" Mayeron, and her children Richard, Ellen and Victor and their children. By request, there will be no memorial service. Donations in Dr. Witten's memory may be forwarded to the University of Miami School of Medicine Department of Dermatology at 1600 NW 10 Avenue Rm. 2023A, Miami, FL 33136. Dearest Terri, and family how can I find the words to express how fondly, and with how much gratitude I remember this marvelous friend, who not only was a consumate gentleman, but who saved my husband's life in 1963.His gentle demeanor, soft voice, and copius notes, gave us confidence ,and briliant analysis of a horrendous medical situation did the trick.Having known the Parrades family growing up I had met victor in the past, but oh thank God ,we knew him in the present. Both of you were fortuate to have found each other. The world is a far better place for his presence, and all will miss his absence.Know ,however, that each of us whose lives he touched will keep a piece of him with us always. "now cracks a noble heart.Good night sweet prince.and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest." fondly Jo Vineberg

I was a patient of Dr. Witten's for many years during the 1970's and 80's. His innovative treatment for cystic acne was revolutionary. The facials, the injections and his own prescription for makeup were innovative in his field. He was a kind and gentle man. I thank him for his fine medical care.

I joined the faculty of the U of M , School of Medicine in 1961. I remember Dr. Witten as a tower of srength and dignity. He made me recover from the fact that I left Columbia University after 12 years. Dermatologists knew what DNA was , so I hung out with them.

Dear Terri and Sam, Victor was a brilliant and very special and distinguished man. His code of ethics was an example for everyone. True, he certainly was a renaissance, but he was so much more than that. At this time, I remember his parents, who were my wonderful neighbors in Jacksonville, and Sam and the children. I will always remember Victor for his goodness and his achievement, not only in medicine, but in life. With love, Norma Kipnis Wilson

What an amazing and extraordinary human being we have lost! My family and I had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Witten for several years prior to his final retirement. He was not only a gifted physician and scientist but one of the most kindest people I have ever met.
We all are poorer for his loss.

An esteemed, elegant, and distinguished teacher and practitioner of dermatology, who represented the highest standard of the profession, who the rest of us always envied and tried to emulate. He gave the very best care to his patients and was always available to teach students and residents.

Our heartfelt condolences to Terri and all of Victor's family. Victor was a giant in his field. He was a caring and truly professional physician to his patients. He cared for Eli, with devotion, when he was stricken in 1982.
In Aspen and in Miami he taught us, through sharing with us, his love of great wines and fine food.
We will never forget him, for the world rarely produces a
