Oh Mr. Tuohy, you were my favorite teacher in junior high. You always made us laugh, and I'll never forget your "take your books and shove them!...under your desks". I was blessed to have had you for 8th grade English. May you rest in peace, dear soul!

I was Mr. Tuohy's student in Glades in 7th grade in 1985. I just found an old blurry picture of him and came across this website. I still remember the spelling competitions. Also one day when I was sick he suggested I go home and sit in a bath and have a shot of whisky. He made quite an impression. I'm grateful for having known him.

I knew Bill in the early seventies when we lived in the Jade Gardens apartments in South Miami. He was a totally awesome friend and gentleman. My future wife, Holly, and I posed for pictures that he used in a couple of books of his poetry. We left Miami for the wild West and fell out of touch, our bad. Bill was a true renaissance man. I went to Glades from 1969-1972. It was the best school thinking back on it now, and Mr. Tuohy´s English class was exciting. Bye, bye, American Pie!

Sincere Condolences to the family of Mr. Tuohy. I am so sorry for your loss. I hope the memories you have bring you joy and comfort. I was in his Spanish class at Glades Middle School. He taught us so much more than Spanish. I loved when he showed us his slide shows with music. My memories of him at Glades have always been cherished. He was a favorite teacher who understood children. May he rest in peace.

Bill was my life long friend, who also served as the best man at my wedding. We grew up together in Chicago, enjoyed every facet of the city, and in 1967, we both moved to Miami, Florida; a city that we both loved. Several years later, my job took me away from Miami, but our friendship remained as strong as ever. At least once a year I would visit Bill in Miami. In 2004, my wife and I moved back to Miami, at which time Bill and I were able to continue our great friendship in our favorite city. My wife and I were extremely fortunate to count Bill as a great friend. He will be missed by his family, his students, and his many friends, who all gained so much just from being in your presence. Bill will always live in our hearts.

Mr. Toughy was my 8th grade teacher at Glades in 1977. He taught The History of Rick and Roll. We learned all about the meanings to the lyrics of Don McClean’s American Pie and Carly Simon’s Your So Vain and some of the Beatles songs. We took ten question tests that few ever aced but we learned so much about life through songwriter’s lyrics. Mr Toughy’s passion for music is still with me today at the age of 57. My son learned to play piano and guitar and it helped him overcome dyspraxia. I shared some of my Mr Toughy stories with my son. I recall my friend Bonnie Rosenthal in that class and saw how Mr Touhhy made her laugh on a regular basis. We all so enjoyed his passion for
Music and his insights into songwriting. Probably was the best class I ever attended.
A true testament to Mr Toughy and how he touched all of our lives is that we still talk About him today. May his memory be a blessing to his family and all his students. Keep his memory alive.

I knew something was wrong when Christmas came and went and I didn't get a card from Mr. Tuohy. I looked him up and was so sad to read of his passing. Mr. Tuohy was my sixth grade teacher at Kirby School in Tinley Park, Illinois in the mid sixties. I believe I was in his first classroom. He was a wonderful teacher and did things I've never seen any other teachers do. He taught us words and words and words and did it in a fun way. He taught us how to follow the stock market and let us pick out our own stock. (I picked Schick)He taught us how to play chess and he took us outside to play baseball so we could come in and learn how to figure averages. I'll never forget our weekly news broadcasts either. I'm so glad he sent me some of his books and I look at them often. Once when he was passing through Dayton, Ohio he stopped to visit and took some beautiful pictures of my family and myself and I have them to this day. He took the best picture I've ever seen of my father. I did get to go to Miami once and he showed me all the wonderful places and sights in his town--I wish I could have gone more. I'm going to really miss Mr. Tuohy, he was one in a million and I am so lucky to have known and learned from him. Next Christmas it's going to be hard not to keep checking the mailbox for my Christmas card with a picture of Brooke and Darren in it and maybe one of my themes from Kirby school. His card was one of my highlights of the season. Thank you Mr. Tuohy for being who you were and sharing with me, you will be missed. Jeanne Peterson Netherton (He always called me Pete)

Hello to all William Tuohy's friends, former students, colleagues, you-name-it! I am his sister and am surprised to see people still leaving messages and also asking questions regarding him. If I can be of any assistance, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I would be very happy to help. Also, some of you might be interested in some of the writings he authored. Thank you for all that you had to say about my dear brother. I loved reading each and every one. Paula

Can't believe this...I didn't know he passed. He was the best English teacher I had, showed me all his Beatles albums and facilitated my passion for English. Mr. Tuohy was a gifted educator who mentored children. I became grew up to become a professional writer and I'll never forget how he contributed to helping me get here. I know he wrote songs and screenplays, but did he ever publish any books or poetry? I can't seem to find any online. Did he publish under a pen name?
He must have been my teacher at Glades around 1991. It's funny, I'm writing a book at the moment and I'm stumped on a certain part, and last night I had a dream Mr. Tuohy gave me advice on what to do next. But that's the thing about dreams, we can never remember what advice we were given once we wake up. Thanks for everything Mr. Tuohy.

Mr. Tuohy,
There is so much I could write because you were so much more than a teacher to me. You were a beacon of caring, encouragement, support and acceptance. You taught me to recognize my talents and embrace them alongside my weaknesses. You made class fun and interesting. You believed in me, and advocated for me, when I struggled in other classes. You taught me to keep writing and edit later, and you encouraged me to create without over scrutinizing. You helped give me the self confidence I lacked. You were, by far, the teacher who made the greatest difference in my life.
Thank you for dedicating your life to teaching children, and making every day of middle school English class a delight. Thank you for your unorthodox approach to teaching gifted kids. Thank you for seeing past our troubles, and embracing us as individuals.
You left a huge imprint in my life and I'll remember you always.

It's difficult for me to believe there is now a world without you. You were part of my life in so many ways for over 50 years. Since we met in 1964 when you lived across the street from me in Missouri, through chess lessons and long talks, through our friendship, romance, break-up, letters, phone conversations . . . you were always close. Even though sometimes several years would pass before we would see each other again, communication was always there. Even after I moved out of Miami, somehow I never pictured you not just a phone call away. There is no one else in the world who loves your books, songs, poems, and writings more than I, and I treasure the unpublished works that you have given me over the years. You were an exceptional person in so many ways. I will miss you terribly.

A friend of a friend told me about the sad passing of a great man, Bill Tuohy. He was English teacher at Glades Middle School to my two children--Michael MacKinnon (2000-2003) and Laura MacKinnon (2004-2007). I used to hear stories about his love of Beatle music, his afternoon shot of Cuban coffee and the funny stories that he related. Myself an aspiring author, I gave him one of my manuscripts of a fictional romance story to read. He encouraged me to continue writing, though I felt my simplistic style wasn't good enough. I heard later that he was writing song lyrics for (I believe, Dylan). Every Christmas I sent him a card with the latest information on Michael and Laura with photos. I know he enjoyed these and was thrilled that they were both attending colleges.
Sympathies to his family for the loss of such a special guy who improved and inspired every life he touched. I know Bill is up in heaven playing music and encouraging others to write and taking heart-felt photos. I send much love to you, Bill 2E. Thanks for all you did for my family and the rest of the world. You will be greatly missed.

I don't know how many of you will take the time to look at Bill's "Guest Book" again, but here goes. All of your stories have touched me more than you can possibly know. Just when I have gotten control, the tears have started again. I adore Bill - Mr. Tuohy to most of you. He is my brother. While you are thanking Bill for all he did for you, I want to thank each one of you for all you did to enrich his life. Friendship, love - whatever you want to call it - is a two-way street. I knew Bill loved teaching but I had no idea how much of an impact he had made.
Our mother and I and all our extended family and all Bill's friends knew what a monumental sense of humor he had. It was truly a gift from God. But what made it special was that Bill used it not to "notice me". It was all for the other guy. To make people happy or in the case of students, to achieve something for the higher good - never for Bill but for others. As I wrote in the Obituary, our father was a professional comedian and terribly funny. Bill probably wasn't as funny as our dad, but he was actually better because he was all about heart. He was not affectionate, he did not say sweet, caring things nor was he one to give praise or tell you how he noticed noticed you or what you had done. However, somehow one knew he cared and that made all the difference.
I could go on and on but I will spare you. I didn't need Bill's passing to know how much I cared. For more years than I can count, I knew how special he was. Just like all of you, I realized that he was a one of a kind individual who thoroughly loved people. He would then go out of his way to make their lives better. I feel very blessed to have been one of those.
One of the readers referred to a nickname Bill gave her. Well I had two: "Pigilinski" and "Sowickymaclurity" (Pig or Sow for short.) He called our mother Harold or Harry for short. On that note, I will stop. I want you to know that it has been fabulous to read all of your words. I will cherish all of them. Thank you for taking the time and giving of yourself and memories.

My condolences to Bill's family. As with many who signed this book, I have nothing but praise for him. I am sad at his passing and happy that he was in my life. If a person is measured by the positive impact he had on others, Bill was rich beyond belief. I, too, fondly remember (not just now but periodically since attending Glades Jr. High from 1972-75) Mr. Tuohy's infectious teaching of creative writing, and I always think of him whenever I hear 'To Sir, with Love' from his slide show (starring John Concepcion, I think). I can picture his (then) long hair, mustache, and passion for his craft like it was yesterday. He will live on in our memories, and we are lucky to have been in his life.

I loved Mr. Tuohy. Though I didn't have him as a teacher, he was good friends with my Mom, another Glades English teacher (Marian Hutchison). She thought the world of him so, of course, so did I! He was always the coolest! Never heard anything but praise for him as a teacher. He is fondly remembered by many of my school friends on our shared Facebook site.

Mr. Tuohy was the best teacher I ever had! He not only educated his students, but inspired us to pursue the imaginative - poetry, photography, film, art. His class was the highlight of my years at Glades, and that says a lot (there were several very good teachers there).

I took rock poetry with Mr. Tuohy back in the late 70s. Mr. Tuohy made poetry accessible and interesting and fun for those of us who didn't naturally take to poetry. He had a unique and endearing personality. And he knew how to make a young person feel important. One day he called me up to his desk for a one-on-one talk. He handed me a paperback book called "The Fantastic Voyage". He said, "Here, I'd like you to read this. I'm curious to know what you think about it." And he grinned widely at me. I took that book and I read it cover-to-cover as a badge of honor. It wasn't an assignment. Mr. Tuohy wanted me to read this book because he thought I would like it and that I would get it. He made me feel that I was special to him. The end-of-the-year videos with "We Will Never Pass This Way Again" were entertaining and bittersweet. They made you stop and savor the good times and friendships that you'd just experienced. Mr. Tuohy had a huge impact on me. And clearly so many others. I hope he knew what a special role he played for us. I will never forget him. Thank you, Mr Tuohy! Deepest condolences to all your family and friends.

Mr. Tuohy was one of those teachers you never forget. I loved his sense of humor and his genuine interest in every student in his class. He called me Gidget because he thought I looked like Sally Field in that role, and took a million pictures of me that I still have. I babysit his kids for a while too. He was a real treasure. I have thought of him many times these last several decades. May he be writing poetry in the sky.

Mr. Tuohy, your idiosyncratic ways and endlessly engaging wit were a hallmark of the 7th grade year. The love of art, poetry, and music you shared has so deeply affected your students. To this day my love the Beatles and classic rock hearkens back to analysis of those wonderful songs in your class. I remain with one regret: I had always told myself I'd buy you a bag of nutter butter cookies...your favorite. I remember one day in class I shared some I had with you and smiling laughing at your sheer delight. Now I regret that lack of initiative. But I, like all your students, remain inspired by the fun, creativity and motivation that you brought every day into the classroom. Now as a 7th grade teacher myself I can only hope to affect children as much as you affected us. Thank you Mr. Tuohy.

My awesome mother, Marian Hutchison, taught for many years with Mr. Tuohy and they were very close. That was a huge point of pride for me when I was at Glades for three years. Mr. Tuohy, Mr. Charlie Adams, and my Mom were comrades and "got" each other. I thought he was just amazing..loved all the slide shows, poetry and photographs of classmates. I have his three books of poetry published in the 70's. He was heartbroken when the publisher chose their own photo's instead of Mr. Tuohy's (and my Mom was too) but 3 of his photos were used. I loved all those poems and read them over and over. They helped me grow into adulthood. He took pictures of my daughters when they were little. He was forever hip and cool and adored by our family. Mom cherished her every season Christmas cards from Bill, including those awesome pics of his two beautiful children. Thank you, Mr. Tuohy

RIP Mr. Tuohy. Your class left a huge impression on me and I will never forget that you were one of the first people to believe in me. It just so happened we were discussing a song about a girl with flowers in her hair and I strolled into class fashionably late (not terribly uncommon I might add). One of my fondest memories of Mr. Touhy (besides his yearly slide shows) was his "Battle of the Words". Mr. Tuohy would have his students learn words like BUNG, MISOGYNIST,PUTREFY, etc. and then have us each battle fellow classmates to see who could come up with the selected word the fastest. Mr. Tuohy would say the meaning of a selected word, and students would scream out the word. The yearly winner would get $20.00 and an A in conduct. I needed that A, (I had a rather talkative persona at that time in his class and I was looking at a D in conduct. So, I studied really hard and I won that years contest. I still have the 100 or so flash cards that I used to study from. He was definitely my favorite teacher at Glades Jr. High, and helped influence my own decision to become an Elementary School Teacher. You will be missed Bill - my condolences go out to the loved ones that you left behind...

I was a student of Mr. Tuohy's at Glades Middle School during the mid-90s. I will never forget how he taught us Allegory using Don McLean's American Pie. Line by line of the history of music was unfurled before our eyes as he deciphered the classic verses...A true inspiration to anyone with a love of song, the written word, and the passing on of knowledge. I had Bill Tuohy as a teacher at Glades in the late 1960's. He was a gifted teacher who always came into class with an impish grin and an enthusiasm for teaching that was infectious. Mr. Tuohy had such a powerful, positive, and lasting influence in my life. Thanks to his support and recognition, I made it through Glades Jr High. I studied literature in college and wrote many short stories and poems, thanks to his support. He was one of those teachers that they make movies about. He is fondly remembered by me, and clearly by many, many students who he guided forward. Thank you, Mr. Tuohy. I don't know if I would have survived Jr high without you! My thoughts are with the Tuohy family.

One of my all time favorite teachers. I owe half of my vocabulary to him thanks to weekly lists. Still have an original Tuohy card which I will continue to cherish.

I remember Mr. Tuohy so clearly. His unique sense of humor and how kind and encouraging he was to me and probably countless others. He was the first teacher to take notice of my writing--- he made a huge fuss about a poem I wrote for his class and sparked a sudden awareness that writing was something I enjoyed and should do more of. I had actually re-read the poem recently and to ME it was really "7th grade" and a bit overwrought. But what made HIM a great teacher was his ability to see through that to the seed of potential it may have had for future ability..... or at least to recognize that I'd obviously poured a lot of effort into it because I liked the process, and that kids should be encouraged to keep pursuing what they enjoy. I think he had a way of making every kid feel special, at a very formative time in our lives, and of making learning truly fun. HE was special, and an ideal fit for his chosen profession.

Mr. Touhy was a one-in-a-million teacher. He taught not only the subject at hand, but life-lessons and those were taught in a very enjoyable and memorable way. You could talk to him...he made you feel worthy. If you weren't living up to potential, he let you know it, but never demeaned you. I am so sorry he's gone, but so happy that I was blessed to have him as one of my life shapers! Goodby Mr. Tuohy! You were truly loved!

Dear Mr. Tuohy, of all the teachers I had throughout my career as a student, YOU are the one who always sticks out in my memory. You touched so many kids' lives and made us all better people. You were the example of what all teachers should be. I just found out you passed away. Just yesterday, I was listening to this song, which always takes me back to your class. Thank you for all the things you taught me. I'll bet your funeral will be overflowing with all your old students. I won't be there, but I will be in my heart. This song is for you, with lots of love. May you rest in peace and make music in heaven! http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Vd6zYQPCgsc

Mr. Touhy you were a special man who taught and touched and enriched a lot of people I grew up with. Special people, smart people, successful, balanced and good people with families who still live in the area. You were a special and gifted, once-in-a-lifetime type of teacher. The kind movies are made of. May you rest in peace. The world has lost a hero. My thoughts and prayers, love and admiration are with your family and close circle of friends.

It is hard to remember all the teachers that I had in the mid 70's. Mr. Tuohy was one of those teachers that you'll never forget. I remember the last day of school for the year and Mr. Tuohy played a slide show of pictures taken thru the year of students at Glades (Junior) High. While the slide show was playing, Seals & Crofts song "We will never pass this way again" was the background music. Strange how at that time, I never realized what he was trying to instill in us. Of course, every time I hear that song (and I still do because I still listen to 70's music) I realized as I got older what he was saying to us. With the passing of each day, we would never have "that" day again. It was a joy and honor having Mr. Tuohy as a teacher. His students were lucky to have him. RIP Mr. Tuohy, you left your mark on this world.

Mr. Tuohy was a gifted teach who had a profound influence on my lives, including mine. I took a journalism class from him and he helped me learn photography. I loved his year-end slideshows, which were composed of photographs he took during the school year and set to music. They are one of my fondest memories of junior high.

I was a student in Mr. Tuohy's class 30 years ago, and today (I realize) I am the same age now as he was then. In those 30 years since, I have thought of so many moments in his class and remember vividly his love of photography, which he shared with us through his slide shows. I catch myself periodically telling some of his jokes I remember.
But perhaps his greatest influence upon me was how he made creative writing an integral part of his English class. It was my first opportunity to read, write, and get feedback on poems. I was far from the best writer—even among my peers. But I believe his strong response made me want to work hard, to get better.
So, as I stand here today, with a doctorate in Creative Writing, teaching at the Honors College at the University of Utah, I wanted to give one last tip of the hat to a teacher and mentor who made an incredible contribution to my life.
Thanks, Mr. Tuohy. The world is poorer without you, but all the richer for the time you were here.
